John,

What color smoke? I assume it is black, meaning too much fuel. You might have a sunk float, or something else that is cause too much fuel flow (as indicated by roughness when you lift from the throttle).

It may be time for a thorough carb cleaning or overhaul - I suspect you've might have some plugged/sticky passages. Another thought would be the EGR system - make sure the valve is operating properly, but that is less likely.

The high idle could be a myriad of things, but they generally all involve the carb. You should thoroughly clean the outside of the carb, especially the linkages with carb cleaner. Likely the fast idle cam is sticking on. Look for any broken springs, disconnected hoses, or loose wires on the carb.

A trick I've done in the past is to disconnect the fuel inlet hose to the carb, and dip it down to let the fuel run out. Then tip it up and fill the hose itself with carb cleaner, and reconnect. Start the engine and run it until it clears up (it will probably buck and kick for awhile. Might save a carb job.

Write back with some more symptoms and also check the archives - I've written about this a fair bit....glen
