Here in the mental health community where I dwell I don't trust a lot of people to rely on their own Conscience-s. And I'm not even counting the crazy ones.
I can be pretty relativistic, but not THAT relativistic.
And "harming others" is a pretty loaded phrase. I'll bet our Conscience-s would find a lot of disagreement there, especially if we got into potential harm, which is the entire basis of taking away the drivers' licenses of those with active epilepsy or other illnesses that cause loss of control or consciousness, however temporary. All it takes is a second.
In fact, right now Keddi and I are tearing our hair out because our elderly, drug-addled, hypertense, demented mother has had two mini-strokes and several parking lot dings and refuses to quit driving. We have called everyone from the DPS to her neurologist to APS only to be told that she's just barely competent enough that no one can stop her (although in her neuro's case, they just don't give a damn). And, mind you, as a social worker I have a lot more knowledge and resources than most. But I don't have any power.
Wouldn't you agree that by the time she hurts or kills someone it's too late?
