Subject: QOTD For Friday, June 24th 2022:

The following quotation is taken from Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon. Copyright 1992 All Rights Reserved. Chapter 36, Prestonpans:

"You're looking very well...niece." from the corner of my eye, I saw Charles's mouth drop open.

"You aren't," I said bluntly.

He glanced dispassionately down at the bent and twisted legs. And 100 years time, they would call this disease after it's most famous sufferer -- the Toulouse-Lautrec syndrome.

"No," he said. "But then, it's been two years since you saw me last. Mrs Duncan estimated my survival at less than two years, then."

I took a swallow of the brandy. One of the best. Charles was anxious.

"I shouldn't have thought you'd put much stock in a witch's curse," I said.

A smile twitched the fine cut lips. He had the bold beauty of his brother Dougal, ruined as it was, and when he lifted the veil of detachment from his eyes, the power of the man over shown the wreck of his body.

[> I've always found Collum to be an interesting character. What would have been the MacKenzie clan's course with Collum fully at the helm, instead of Dougal having to be his brother's emissary? Were they of the same mind for a course of action, or did Dougla pay lip service, then do as he chose? -- DianaH, Fri, June 24 2022, 9:37:12

[> [> I think Column is a lot smarter and cool headed than Dougal. If he was whole, Dougal might have been shoved aside because of his temper. He’s not a great leader of men, but very proud and egotistical. If they didn’t need him, he wouldn’t be so powerful. Love that Column and Claire stupified Charlie. -- Kathy in PA, Fri, June 24 2022, 12:25:48

[> [> [> Colum as a "full" man would have been a force to be reckoned with indeed. I have always wondered if Colum, had he been able, would have pulled a sort of Lord Lovat move and found some way to come out on top no matter which side would have won. Most likely though the clan would still have suffered under the English, one way or another, but maybe Leoch might have been saved at least. Ah well, hindsight and all that eh? -- Cait, Sat, June 25 2022, 10:46:14
