Astrid, I think all your picks were great, as were Siannach's (though I disagree with her digs--"Stand," for instance, sucks; but it is not representative of R.E.M.'s superlative early career; and I also believe Concrete Blonde had several good albums--and what was that other deal Johnette Napolitano sang on? I have the disc, but can't remember the name...it's very cool though).
As for calling the pick of the Beatles "cliche," I don't think that necessarily is the case just because there is wide agreement that they were the Greatest Band Ever. I can't really argue with it.
Surprised no one mentioned Velvet Underground, possibly the most influential band (in terms of good music, anyway) ever.
Then there are of course the usual suspects:
Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead...etc. All worthy candidates.
My personal favorite band, the one I most like listening to, is The Catherine Wheel. More recently, Travis is really gaining a huge amount of respect from me, though unfortunately I haven't bought any albums yet. And there's a lot of great electronica out there, though I neglect to keep track of names--my best friend has a huge vinyl collection with which he regales me, mostly deep house.
I also love cool jazz, and Bach.
Alan
