REM is essentially nonsensical, but their music is cool nevertheless.

I'd disagree. They had no longevity which might disqualify them, but their music is the most incredible mix of cacophony and harmony and they gave birth to every guitar band that came after them in the 90s.

Which album? I think they had three excellent albums.

Well, I completely disagree with you. They combined talent and success, but just because they attracted the attention of screaming girls doesn't negate the power of their music. The early stuff was to be sure pop music, but some of the finest pop ever written (Can't Buy Me Love, hello!) And the later stuff was amazing.
