[> The last movie that I saw was Interrupter with Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. I thought it was a slow movie. But I liked it over all. (more inside…) -- Rosie, 11:32:58 05/05/05 Thu [1]

One thing made me think was that in one scene Nicole's character explains that the African tribute that she could speak their language would not take a revenge on someone who had killed their loved one, if they could help it. She said that when they captured the killer they would take him to the sea, somewhere that he would not be able to survive on his own, and drop him there. Then they would give the victim’s family a chance to either go save the man or let me drown. She said their belief was that letting him die was the coward way of grieving and the family would grieve for the rest of their lives. However, if they went and rescued him, they believed that they had gotten closer and that they could now move on with the rest of their lives.

I thought that is really true, not for the society that we live in, but more on a personal cases. Of course, society goes after the offender, in most cases they catch him/her, take him/her to court, get a conviction and put him/her in jail and they believe justice was served. But the family, who have lost someone dear, if they are able to forgive the criminal (go rescue him), they can move on with the rest of their lives, if they can not, if they are not able to believe that he/she is paying for what he/she has done (they let him die), they can not move on and they are in the grieving mode for a very long time. They are stuck with the hatred that will affect the rest of their lives.

So I started thinking which one am I? Am I the one that can forgive and move on, or am I the one that hold grudge for the rest of her life? I hope that nothing serious would ever happen to me or to my family, but silly things like for example, if someone cuts in front of me in a supermarket, will I confront them (want revenge) and tell them that I was in line first, if so would I tell them in an irritated voice, or a clam voice. Or would I let them get way with it (forgive them), reasoning that they probably have a reasonable explanation for their behavior and tell myself the worst is that I am going to wait an additional 5 minutes, and what is 5 minutes, let them go in front of you. My answer is that I will tell them in a calm voice, but even then I would let me go in front of me anyway. But I would judge them by their reaction. If they ignore me, then I conclude they are ideates and I would stay away. If they explain themselves by saying they are running late and they are sorry, then I would conclude they had a reasonable excuse.

[> [> I saw this last weekend and enjoyed it. You really thought muchly about this one Rosie. I liked the analogy but didn't go very far applying it to myself. I think you're right that it works for the little things too. -- C, 17:30:44 05/05/05 Thu [1]

[> [> Interesting. I wasn't planning on seeing this movie. But I think I will now, Rosie. -- Canrane, 21:07:06 05/05/05 Thu [1]

Personally, for small things in life like cutting in line, I'm definitely more of a forgive person. I tend to avoid confrontation and just let things slide. But for serious things? I think I'd lean more towards revenge. I think it would take me a loooong time to get to the forgive stage if I even get there at all.

I mean, a part of me knows that technically two wrongs don't make a right with the death penalty. But then I see people like Karla Homolka about to get out of jail...and all I want is for her to never see the light of day again!

I know this is kind of veering off topic, but I can't BELIEVE they're making a movie about Bernardo & Homolka. It's one thing if the killers are dead or behind bars for the rest of their lives. But to sensationalize it (and plan to release it) at the same time she's getting out of jail? It's sickening!

[> [> [> Canrane I had not heard of her. I am reading about her now (http://psychcentral.com/wiki/Karla_Homolka). That is so sick, her own sister!! Boy is she real sick. You know the problem is with the system, to be able to make the most guilty party gets what he deserved they cut a deal with the less involved party. I agree that is wrong. I have seen documentaries that the prosecutor would not make a deal with less involved guilty party and then still won. I believe the system needs to be changed. Twelve years for killing two people. I agree, she got off real easy. -- Rosie, 11:28:03 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> Hey Rosie...sorry about the rant. I just got thinking about it and was just so disgusted that it came out. The publication ban was while the trial was ongoing. I still don't understand why you would want to act in something like this, but there you have it. That girl from the 70's show plays Homolka. -- Canrane - didn't mean to mar the light-heartedness of this board with such a serious topic. Sorry guys!, 13:31:27 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> [> Hi Canrane. Please do not worry about the rant. Your post was actually very informative. I like to hear the stories of how a crime was solved, even though this was kind of open and shut case. I wonder if she had not come forward would the authorities been able to pin the crimes to them eventually. -- Rosie (I think they should have opted for documentary. I think these kinds of stories should be given more as facts rather than fiction.), 14:22:44 05/09/05 Mon [1]

[> [> [> You know I believe it is the society that makes people who they are. A newborn is not a killer; it is not in his genes. He grows up, gets influenced by his environment and becomes who he is. That is why I can not put all the blame on the offender. I guess one should also look into the reason why he was drove to abduct, rape and kill these people. -- Rosie, 11:34:28 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> The book I am reading now is kind of interesting. It is Empire Falls by Richard Russo. HBO has made a miniseries based on the book which is scheduled for the end of the month. Paul Newman and Ed Harris are playing the main characters. Paul Newman also played in Nobody's Fool which was based on another book by Russo. Anybody else read Empire Falls or plans to watch the movie? -- Rosie, 11:56:03 05/05/05 Thu [1]

[> Hmmm...let's see. The last movie that sticks out in my mind is Phantom of the Opera. Mixed opinions. I liked pretty much everyone but the Phantom. He was good in some parts/songs, but he clobbered the ending of Music of the Night IMO. The last book I read was "The Last Continent" by Terry Pratchett. Hilarious! I love his stuff. But I didn't get ALL the jokes about Australia in this one. Need to read it again after I brush up on my australian stereotypes and expressions :) -- Canrane, 20:43:27 05/05/05 Thu [1]

[> [> Don't get me started about the Phantom movie, LOL!! - but seriously, GB did pretty good for a guy who never had a voice lesson in his life prior to getting cast as the Phantom!!! (which is why I am actually more dissappointed in Emmy, because she's supposedly been singing at the Met since she was 7 - but you'd never know it from her bad diction, the "charlotte church lip wabble", and in general, myself knowing who knows how many girls who could sing circles around her (even when they were 17) - Raoul was the only decent casting choice in the whole thing.... -- Aria - I did like it though even though it was done so pathetically, lol - I just wish they would have done it right, evil Joel Shumaker!, 07:19:57 05/06/05 Fri [1]

That is why I try to go see a movie during its first weekend when not too many people have seen it. But then I also hate crowded theaters. Can not win, can I? -- Rosie, 11:08:43 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> The last movie I saw was Fever Pitch and it was the best chick flick I've seen in a long time...maybe ever. The comedy was great...actual laugh out loud funny that was for anyone...not cheesy funny. Books? Oh yes....I don't get to read those during the school year...but alas it is summer for me!!!! woot woot....and this is why I stopped going to the other board...I missed all the original posters. Nice to see everyone is still around! -- Cinders, 23:18:39 05/05/05 Thu [1]

[> [> See I just can't figure out why they re-did a movie that isn't that old (and that the original was done with the help of the author of the original novel) - I mean yeah they changed things, but when the original has COLIN FIRTH in it, why make a new one??? LOL!!! (and no I actually haven't even seen the original, lol - but being the Colin Firth fan you know I'd have to have an opinion =) -- Aria, 07:21:39 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> [> I have not seen the movie yet, but I saw part of the interview with the actors. Did you know that one of the scenes was filmed during the World Series game last year? Wow to be there, during the World Series with the Red Sox, they were lucky. And they were told about half an hour before they flow out that they were going. They said that only the main actors went there, no make up people, no extras, they did their own make up, wardrobe, everything. But they got to watch the game. They said every once in a while the directory came and told them to do this and that, but basically they were just themselves. That is kind of weird! -- Rosie, 11:14:15 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> Last movie I saw was Sin City... LOVED IT!!! Last book I read was Made in America by Bill Bryson. I also read The Mother Tongue by him too. Both are about the history of the English language and very fascinating! Bill Bryson always cracks me up. He's more known for his travel books, but I learned a lot from his English books too. -- Nadja / Jennie, 07:55:36 05/06/05 Fri [1]

[> [> [> A lot of people complained that it was too violent, and there are some parts that are... but it's all in black and white, and it's based on a comic book, so the violence never seems real. I most likely will see Monster-in-Law now; I didn't realize MV was in it! -- Nadja / Jennie, 11:13:08 05/07/05 Sat [1]

it's essentially softcore porn. The front of the dvd cover read "unrated version! wildly erotic!" I should have just kicked him out then...
