From the dead grass under a skeletal tree a tawny head appeared, black ears swiveling for the sounds of any danger to either herself or her little ones. For now there seemed to be no unknown lurkers about so the cougaress stood and walked out beyond the grass, still in the shade of the branching tree, and flicked her tail in a motion to the hidden creatures still in the brush. Suddenly two small cubs poked their small spotted head out from the grass, peering after their mother who had lain down in the open to keep watch over her brood. Both curious puma kittens leapt out from the coverings and began to tussle and sniff about in the light snow that had barely covered the ground. Both kits were fully spotted, as all cougar cubs were, with an underlying brown and tan to their coats. They were almost identical except that the male cub was a bit larger than the female, however, with their unstopping movements the differential could not be seen. Psalm watched her cubs and also kept lookout for anyone who thought of approaching, ready to spring and rip out their throats if they got too close.
