Jeff pulled back, crossing his arms across his chest and looking moodily out into the shadows beyond the ring of light from the fire. "Cheysuli," he spat. "No more than beasts. Humans were set apart from the animals for a reason, Alexis. It is a disgrace to all mankind that some of us degrade themselves to run with a lower level of creation. It's not that they aren't decent," he said grudgingly, poking at the coals with a stick. "Plenty of animals can be decent creatures. Like my Gwennie---my little cat. She's as sweet and clever as they come. But that doesn't change the fact that she's below me."

Gwenneveire, who had been submitting to Monet's ministrations with closed eyes and a small smile, suddenly trembled and looked at the tiger with tears pooled in her eyes. Slowly, her great head lowered until it rested on the grass, her cheek pressed against Monet's shoulder. She was too miserable to speak.

"So you see," Jeff continued blithely, "Cheysuli are savages, the lot of them. They've forgotten the laws of true humanity." His eyes narrowed as he looked at the girl. "But if I didn't know any better, Alexis, it would seem that you sympathize with them."

Angelina stifled a snort of laughter, burying her face into the cool, fresh smelling fronds she carried in her arms. Oh, it was a delightful situation. She couldn't wait to see the look on the boy's face when the apple of his eye was revealed as no more than a 'savage'. And yet, she reflected, it seemed that the boy's infatuation with Alexis did not grant her any leeway when it came to Cheysuli. He was adamant in his views, and not even the girl was budging him. Oh, she thought suddenly, I do hope I can be there when his little cat stands before him a Silent Paw. Oh, the anger and misery in his face.... She chuckled quietly.

Before Alexis could reply to Jeff's words, Angie hopped down into the light, holding out her burden. "Blankets!" she said cheerfully, dumping them on the ground. Each leaf was broad and glossy, almost as long as she was tall.

To Alexis, she sent, ::Don't lose your head, kid. We've a ways to go yet.::
