 Kalea blinked. "I never have before," she replied, looking up at the horse and its small rider, "but I'd be perfectly willing to give it a try, if Dante's there to help me." She smiled ly up at the warrior, sure that Gabriel would catch her double meaning. She looked around eagerly from her high perch.

"Isn't this neat, Dante?" she asked the child. "We can see everything from up here!"

Michael looked at Nashota warily. "Life was just fine before you got here," he said stubbornly. "I don't see how you could improve it." He held an arm out as he walked towards the cave's entrance, and Evan flapped quickly to perch there. The eagle fledgling gave Nashota a haughty glance as he and his Cheysuli companion moved out into the early sunshine. Michael scowled to see the other Jellicle sitting with Dante on the horse, but made no comment. Independent-natured though he was, by now he knew better than to question Gabriel's judgement more than once every few days.

"Where are we headed?" he asked his older brother, quickly shouldering a rather heavy pack.
