Subject: And if she was a Holland....

She was related to King Richard II on his mother's side. His mother being Joan, The Fair Maid of Kent, who was married to a Holland prior to the macho Black Prince falling head over armour for her (much to his father Edward III's consternation). Alianor could have been an inlaw of Richard's or a half cousin, I am not sure. However as the nobility was notoriously inbred she was prolly a relative somewhere along the line. : )
The source I quoted from indicated that it was either late in 1398 or early 1399, but as Mom has the book right now I can't recheck it for a bit!
As for Eleanor of Acquitaine, that woman was quite the headstrong vixen. In 1146 her first husband Louis VII of France decided to go on a crusade, she decided to go along with him. The Pope had declared that no women were to go
( I suspect he was thinking more of camp followers and prostitutes)so Eleanor had a male suit of clothes made complete with gold buskins and a plumed helmet made for her! This way she went as a male! (Source: Warrior Queens by Antonia Fraser)
