Brian,

The experience that you described certainly sounds like
Sleep Paralysis. I have suffered episodes of Sleep Paralysis over a number of years. Sleep Paralysis is where the body is paralysed yet the brain and the senses remain active. This occurs apparently as a form of safety mechanism between being awake and REM Sleep to prevent your body acting out your dreams.

One of the common features of Sleep Paralysis is the experience of nightmarish hallucinations such as strange figures in the room or voices. Some believe that many people
who claim to have been abducted by aliens are actually
suffering from Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis. I myself have
experienced hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis and I know it can be alarming.

Approximately 6 percent of the Adult Population suffer from Sleep Paralysis. It is not commonly associated with mental illness but can in some circumstances be linked to sleep
deprivation or anxiety. One way of breaking the 'spell' of
sleep paralysis that I have heard of is to rapidly move your eyes from side to side. I haven't tried this yet however.

I hope that this information is of use. I have included
some links before that may be useful:-
