c) Depth of Crack


The depth of a crack is to be determined in one of the following ways: -


1. In slabs, by observing whether water on the top surface of the slab
passes through the crack and underside of the slab.


If water is seen to pass through the slab, the crack is deemed to be a through crack of type NT.


In all other cases it is deemed to be a non-through crack of type NT.


2. In-all other elements, if the line of the crack on one surface can be traced on another surface parallel to the first surface or in the case of a beam, if the crack can be seen too traverse two adjacent surfaces in different planes, it is deemed to be a through crack of type T.


3. If a crack follows an irregular pattern on one surface of an element
only and is branched at non-through crack of type NT.


d) Method for the Remedial Repair of Cracks


The following permissible methods for rectifying cracks are to be used and to be applied according to the overall classification of the crack.


1. Simple surface sealing of the crack by brushing into it wherever it is visible, a coat of heavy grade bitumastic paint or other approved durable inert waterproof material.


2. Filling the crack by brushing in dry cement and moistening after
the treatment.


3. Brushing into the crack cement grout or cement paint until the
crack appears to be filled.


4. Cutting a V-groove and filling with Tricopac or other approved
material.


5. Sealing by arranging for a low viscosity polymer resin to flow under the influence of gravity or injection, into the crack to fill it and harden therein.


6.Sealing by injection epoxy resin under pressure into the crack
until it exudes at weep holes located so as to ensure that when this occurs the crack may reasonably be expected to have been completely filled and all air to have been displaced by resin.
