I guess it's the Northern Hemisphere imposing its culture on the Southern.

I used to live in Pennsylvania when I was a young kid, and we did have snowy Christmases often. When my family moved to Southern California I was shocked to find shirt sleeve weather on or around Christmas pretty often. But we always talked about how nice it would be to have a "white" Christmas (except my dad who really enjoyed not having to drive in the snow!).
