Good points. Here's my 2 cents..

I think the case of an Avatar is different. If an Avatar is already fully liberated at birth, the karma he brings with him gets worked out by sadhana in that life as Avatar. This is maybe why Yogananda was able to do things an Avatar could do without necessarily having permission, and also why he sometimes appeared as human as anyone else, having certain karmas to work out just like the rest of us. But like Ramakrishna says, karmas that accrue around a liberated soul are like burnt string that falls to ashes as soon as you touch it. Also, Yogananda nor anyone else Ive ever read has ever claimed that you dont experience emotion in nirbikalpa samadhi. The mind continues to function (you couldnt exist in the world if it didnt) but the inner awareness of oneself as being untouched by anything of the mind or body is uninterrupted, as it can be when you come out of sabikalpa. By mind I mean no only sensory/motor but the whole lot of impressions in the mind-stuff which includes emotions. There are plenty of other indications that this is so throughout SRF literature. For example, one thing I remember PY saying was that certain ignorant things his own disciples said from time to time would make him angry. If he was above anger I take it to mean that he had no ego around which that emotion could take a hold, it simply manifested and disappeared again in the mind, without affecting the inner flow of awareness of Sat-Chit-Ananda at all.

Someone once told me an Avatar's life is different. He already knows all that is happening in past, present, future and simply plays out his life like an actor. Though PY hadnt gotten permission (that we know of) to initiate in Kriya at that stage, he may nevertheless very well have had the inner authority as an Avatar to do it anyway (but then who knows, maybe Babaji or LM gave him the permission inwardly).

As for the nirvikalpa thing. PY said he entered nirvikalpa in that life kind of late because of all the demands made on him because of his life's mission. If he could go into samadhi by doing one Kriya, Id say thats pretty close to nirvikalpa and the question then becomes, when did he say that statement? Was it before or after he again entered nirvikalpa? My guess is it was before.
