"The power comes from the Guru. That's all that's needed."

Of course that is not all that is needed! A high degree of expertese is also needed before someone should set themselves up as a teacher of Kriya Yoga or anything else. On the other hand if they had the backup of other more experienced yogi's such as a P Yogananda when he was still physically living, or a large organisation with others to turn to, then a much less experienced person can teach. Those are the circumstances in which people such as Walters were authorised to initiate. While they had that back up. And this is not just referring to some spiritual power, I am talking about the practical aspects of answering difficult queries etc.

You keep refering to the "traditional" approach. Do you actually know what the requirements are in the "traditional" lineages before someone becomes eligible to give initiation and act as acharya? I had the requirements explained to me in confidence so I cannot state them here, but I can say that it requires a high degree of attainement. People do not receive the right to give initiation in just a few months. It requires much practice and proficiency. People such as Walters and Davis would not have qualified.

The situation with Yogananda was that he was teaching to numbers which no previous Kriya Guru had attempted. In short demand for Kriya initiation outstripped the supply of competant teachers. In order to satisfy demand it was necessary to allow some people with little experience, such as Walters, to conduct initiation ceremonies. However that does not mean they were therefore empowered to set themselves up as Gurus. They were simply helping with some aspects of Yogananda's mission.
