A couple select SR schools will do well, but the rest haven’t a chance. If you’re there and not part of the connected few schools, dance for the joy and pride of qualifying but don’t hold your breath for a fair result.

I love Columbus to feis, especially when a certain school isn’t hosting it. They aren’t there are on Saturday and not a ton on Sunday. Depending on where someone in the Southern Region lives, it can be one of the closest areas to feis.

Since two of their schools stopped hosting feis, we haven’t travelled there but love to go there to shop, great restaurants, museums etc.

  • Advice on Northern VA Schools -- Shopping around, 16:36:54 03/20/25 Thu
Hi everyone! Our family is returning to the dance world after a 4 year hiatus, and we're shopping around for a new school in the northern VA area. Based on the studio locations listed on their websites, the schools that make the most sense for us are Butke, Foley, Maple, McGrath (if they're even still active? What happened with that split??), and O'Neill-James.

Kids are competitive, but we care more about nice teachers with happy dancers than being at a top tier school with bad vibes.

    Any advice is appreciated!

  • Is Irish Dancing Dead or Dying? -- We're New Here (Confused), 14:12:22 02/11/25 Tue
I've read almost every post in this forum, and it's very negative. The tone is basically, "Riverdance is over, this sport is dying. Everyone's a cheater. The biggest and best org is evil, bankrupt, and incompetent. Every great teacher in the area is a cheating scoundrel."

Now we've relatively new to this world, but we've seen some pretty exceptionally talented people working really hard. I've seen some great musicians. I've seen a lot of passion about Irish culture. I see kids having a great time and really determined to master this art form and do well in this sport.

So, which is it? Is the anonymous nature of the board making for a completely tainted view of the world of Irish Dance? Is everyone really so unhappy and are all the feisanna collapsing and disappearing right before our eyes?

Other dance forms don't have this. Nobody is worried that ballet was just a fad and about to disappear. Everywhere I've been people are awestruck by the power of a great Irish dancers. People love this little art form we're all a part of.

I'm skeptical that things are anything like the picture painted here. If you care about your kids and their passion for this sport, I think you need to quit poisoning the well and be a part of making this a happier, healthier place.

  • Once again heartbroken. DD on last page of results again. TC is clueless. Choreography is dreadful. -- wits end, 18:05:55 12/09/24 Mon
DD comes out of classes beaming. Says TC loves her dancing and she's improved immensely. We get to SRO and DD's choreography is honestly embarrassing. Looks 20 years out of date and other dancers are literally whirling past her. I could tell within the first 5 seconds that DD would be rock bottom. DD was shellshocked coming off stage saying she knows circles were danced around her.

I don't even know what to say to TC. DD has done well at small local feises and has been in opens over 2 years yet can't get a single Oireachtas judge to give her higher than 20th from the bottom. Not even 1 in 10 judges anywhere approaching a recall.

Advice? How do you tell a TC without breaking her heart that she is underpreparing her dancers and giving them terrible choreography? We love TC dearly but DD is committed to improving and working towards that recall. I know we can't get there with TC. What to do?

Looks like things got a bit untucked midway thru the dance. A special tailoring of the dress and compression kickpants should prevent another flopout. It must have been quite embarrassing for the girl and those in the first few rows.

Once you see it you can’t unsee it. I hadn’t noticed it until this weekend although I had seen other posts about it. The new trend is to make eyes at the judges over your shoulder and bobble your head around? The number of dancers now doing this and placing high is outstanding. It did give us some good chuckles this weekend.

  • Today I am thankful my daughter isn't competing at SRO next weekend. -- Blessed and grateful, 07:41:27 11/28/24 Thu
So proud of my daughter for making her own decisions and deciding to step back from competition this year. She's focused on school and various clubs which she's enjoyed immensely. She still dances twice a week to keep up her skills and for the fun of it. Also grateful for our TC who fully supports her and gives her the same quality of training as those competing next week.

We hope in the next couple years there are meaningful reforms in Irish Dance that ensure fair, equitable, and affordable competition. Unfortunately, many of those at the highest levels of the Commission are those who engaged in, or turned a blind eye to, the cheating and favors and have driven up the cost to extortionary levels. Until leadership changes or the Board of Directors puts their foot down, we don't see CLRG having much of a future.

  • A reminder to those out there saying most dancers aren't affected by the cheating. -- Everyone pays the price, 13:46:45 10/08/24 Tue
We've all read the comments that this cheating only affects those at the top and that you child wasn't personally affected. Those people forget that the podium is not the goal for the vast majority of dancers out there. For many, a recall at Oireachtas or Nationals would be a dream come true. Others are aiming for a world qualification and are thrilled even if they're in the last qualifying spot. Still others are aiming for a recall at worlds and a smaller group is aiming for a world medal. And yes, some legitimately aim for the podium or even 1st place.

The texts that we've seen ask for favors at ALL of these levels. Yes, the texts that beg for 100 stand out, but the ones asking for a WQ or just a recall should concern us more because that affects far more of our dancers. Just think of the cascading effects cheating in just one Oireachtas age group could have: one dancer missed the podium because their teacher wanted someone else on it that day; someone gets boosted into a WQ position ahead of a dancer who deserved it; a dancer misses a NQ due to several rogue high marks for the dancers just above them; a dancer from a small school misses the recall because enough far inferior dancers from bigger school got taken care of. It just snowballs to the point where dozens of dancers in each competition end up getting more or less than they deserve on the day. For too long we've shaken our heads in disbelief and chalked it up to "stylistic preferences" or any of the other tired excuses we've been told to believe.

I am sick looking at these texts from judges my daughter has danced in front of and now realizing they were never going to judge and rank her according to her performance. In large enough Oireachtas competitions, the podium, the top 10, and the WQ list appear to be mostly, if not fully, predetermined.
