Irish dance made me friends along the way, was a healthy physical activity, connected me to my heritage, and I won things sometimes. Was/is it perfectly fair? No, but few judged activities are. The idea that it's only worth it if you win, or if its perfectly fair, or if you "get something" out of it seems silly - the journey IS what you get out of it in most things you do as a child.
