Background:
I'm now less than a month away from getting 3 extractions and my [metal] braces put on. I first started looking into the idea in January, and it's taken me this long to get used to the idea, find an orthodontist and a treatment I could live with, and commit. I've scheduled putting them on for the weekend after my soccer season ends so I can play without distraction (and pain). My orthodontist says my sentence is somewhere between 14 and 18 months.
Question:
At this point I think I'm as ready as I can be for the big day but one nagging concern is eating and keeping them clean; I don't think I can survive on soup for a year and a half. Can someone outline for me what the problem(s) are with eating 'normal' foods with braces and how you deal with them? When you talk about food getting stuck in your braces, is this the odd little bit, or en masse all over? Is it almost certain to happen at any meal, or is it just something that bites you once in a while? Do you carry something with you at all times for cleaning? Do you carry a little mirror so you aren't constantly running to the bathroom to check? For some reason I find the idea of constantly getting stuff stuck in my teeth hard to deal with; a lot harder than having the braces there in the first place. I need details on what to expect so I can begin coping!
