SMARTCARDS

Business drivers and issues

Date/Time: 5th March 2002, 11:00am –12:00noon; Room: EC3 Elgar Road

Presenter: Mr. Ranjit Das

Vice President

Cards Etc

Abstract

Smartcards have been around for a long time now and have been touted

as the panacea for internet security, credit card fraud, ticketing

evasion and so on. Most people do not realise that they are already

using smartcards – in their mobile phones. These chips have 8k-32k

memory and are capable of doing much more than making phonecalls and

storing phone numbers.

This presentation leads the audience through a brief history of

smartcards and recent deployments. In Australia, there have been a

few – Telstra phonecards, Mondex ecash pilots, Visacash pilots at the

Gold Coast, ANZ Visa First and Sydney Mass Transit (held up in

litigation currently). Throughout the world a number of large

implementations have taken place and their is a discussion on their

success or otherwise.

Ecommerce is a big driver through secure authentication both at B2C

and B2B levels. Recent trends are towards multiple applications on

the card and business drivers vary based on region. for example,

North Asia drivers are massive credit card fraudulent transaction, ID

requirements. Why is the technology not yet in use widely - lot of

discussion anticipated on this subject.

What are the issues for educators and research scholars ? Is this a

technology looking for a problem? Some believe it is has been heavily

over engineered driving up deployment costs. Consumers and issuers

alike can see the benefits, key question is 'how to make money from

it'.
