Keycorp launches MULTOS Version 5 on Philips Semiconductors' MIFAREŽ PROX dual interface smart card controller range

At the Cards Australia event held today, Keycorp announced that it will port its MULTOS Version 5 operating system to Philips Semiconductors' MIFAREŽ PROX dual interface smart card controller range. This follows Philips Semiconductors' recent announcement to support Keycorp's highly advanced smart card platform, the 32K MULTOS.

MULTOS Version 5, combined with the MIFAREŽ PROX smart card controller range, supports both contactless and contact interface operations, allowing contactless transport ticketing applications, as well as existing contact banking schemes. MULTOS supports such applications as EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa Cash); credit/debit; and electronic purses, such as Mondex, PROTON and Chipper.

Keycorp's MULTOS Version 5 operating software includes the MULTOS Version 4 standard and adds optional features such as the provision of a contactless interface for transport applications; support for GSM SIM applications; and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) for mobile commerce applications.

Philips Semiconductors' MIFAREŽ PROX has been developed to also support MULTOS Version 5, along with an emulation mode for MIFAREŽ Classic, making it compatible with the widely installed MIFAREŽ infrastructure.

Philips Semiconductors will manufacture and deliver the first MIFAREŽ PROX smart card controllers equipped with Keycorp's MULTOS Version 5 operating system, which can then be embedded onto smart cards and supplied to card-issuing organisations.

Keycorp's general manager of the smart cards business, Brian McKeon, said "Keycorp is pleased to be working with Philips Semiconductors, who will be marketing Keycorp's MULTOS Version 5 to the global market. This announcement is another stage in the continuing relationship between Keycorp and Philips Semiconductors."

"We are particularly excited by the opportunity to capture the potential for contactless ticketing tenders in today's market, more specifically, the well publicised Australian tenders of Sydney Transport; Brisbane City Council; and ACT Government. All three bodies have expressed strong interest in the MULTOS platform for multiple application use. Most recently MULTOS was selected as the preferred platform by the ACT Government, and other Australian agencies, based on the high level of security and supporting infrastructure that it provides."

Karsten Ottenberg general manager of the Identification business line, Philips Semiconductors, said "Philips Semiconductors considers this co-operation a significant step forward in developing multi-application platforms in the contactless world. We appreciate Keycorp's trust in our competency in smart card technology, especially in contactless and dual interface solutions. The combination of Keycorp's MULTOS implementation and Philips' leading-edge MIFAREŽ dual interface technology will further boost the migration of contactless cards into multi-application concepts.

Keycorp's MULTOS Version 5 and Philips Semiconductors' MIFAREŽ PROX smart card processor will be generally available early 2001.
