Date Posted: 09:18:48 02/09/03 Sun What is Smart Card ? The shape and plastic material of Smart Card is the same as the common Credit Card, but the Smart Card has 8-bit or 32-bit Micro-processor (MPU), which has a self-arithmetic function, COS(Chip Operating System) and EEPROM which is a safe storage area, embedded in its surface as an IC chip. Development History of Smart Card 1974 - Roland Moreno in France acquired IC Card Patent - Established Innovatron Co. 1979 - BULL developed CP8 SPOM Card 1983 - Telecom France applied Smart Card to Phone Card and MiniTel 1986 - France adopted Smart Card as a standard off-line Credit Card 1986 - Established ISO 7816-1 1988 - Financial Organization in France issued Credit Card 1989 - Adopted GSM SIM IC Card 1991 - Started standardization of EUROPAY, MASTERCARD, VISA : EMV 1992 - Finland Electronic Purse : AVANT, Denmark Electronic Purse : DANMONT 1993 - UK Electronic Money : MONDEX 1994 - Belgium : PROTON 1996 - Started common standardization of PC/SC 1996 - Cyberflex Card of 32-bit Smart Card (Schlumberger Co.) 1998 - Bus & Subway Cards in Seoul, Hanaro Bus & Subway Cards in Pusan Development Process of Smart Card 1'st Generation 2'nd Generation 3'rd Generation 4'th Generation Smart Card SCOT (BULL CP8) TB-100 M-COS CC-100 ME-2000 MP-COS Payflex/Multiflex Star-COS SS, LG, HYC TB-HF Fastflex MP-COSEMV Features Single Application Multi Application, Electronic purse Combi Card Toll-Purse Crypto-Processor Contactless Card Passive Card Mifare Card Mifare Combi Card OTI Combi Card Memory Card Phone Card - 100 million/yr, ID Card Phone Card - 300 million/yr Phone Card - use in the whole Europe area Types of Smart Card >> Contact Card A contact smart card requires insertion into a smart card reader with a direct connection to a conductive micromodule on the surface of the card(typically gold plated) The data in smart card is retrived and written It is appropriate for application of transportation authorization and electronic signature that can be processed many data in forced to security >> Contactless Card A contactless card requires only proximity to a reader, but the reader and card have antenna and it is via contactless link that two communicate This is ideal for aplication such as mass transportation and distribution which requires very fast and interface It is applicable to the transport and distribution >> Hybrid Card(Contact + Contactless) A Hybrid card has two chips, each with its respective contact and contactless interface High cost ex) Hanaro Transport Card in Busan >> Combi Card A Combi card is a single chip card with a contact and contactless interface It is possible to access the same chip via a contact or contactless interface with a very high level of security The mass transportation and banking industries are expected to be the first to take advantage of this technology ex) COEX Multi-Card [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
