Power to the chip is delivered from card readers in two ways: 1 )Contact 2) Contact-less The Contact card receives power to the IC when the card is inserted into a card reader. Standards dictate the positions of the contacts between card and reader. Contact-less cards receive energy as a result of transferring of electromagnetic energy between the reader and the coil that is placed in the card. Combi-cards use Combi Chips; a chip that can operate in “Contact” and “Contactless” mode. The I.C cards are required to conform to standards laid down by International Standards Organization, i.e. ISO-standard ISO 7816 for Contact Cards and ISO 10536 for Contactless Cards.
