"One of the world's busiest urban commuter railway networks is set to benefit from advanced 'smart card' technology being pioneered by Australian firms," Mr Vaile said. The smart card technology, developed in Hong Kong by Perth-headquartered CSI Pacific, will be used by staff of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) to gain access to 37 local railway stations and related buildings. "The card system has proven a real winner, as it represents not only great Australian technology but also innovative and imaginative thinking," Mr Vaile said. Mr Vaile is in Hong Kong at the start of a week-long Australian Business Mission showcasing Australian trade and industry capability in Greater China. The Managing Director of CSI Pacific Hong Kong, Mr Peter Rogers, said the access system was a major component of a $13 million CSI Pacific contract with the MTRC. He said the system had been developed in close cooperation with another Australian firm, ERG Transit Systems, which had already pioneered the introduction of the ubiquitous "Octopus" transport-ticketing card for Hong Kong rail staff and commuters. Mr Rogers said that, on the strength of its work with MTRC, CSI Pacific had won a similar contract with another major local rail company, Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation, for an access system for its Westrail line.
