pourquoi5 (ID#: 224751) Will Target/Catuity Loyalty Work? 24/1/03 11:45:56 AM 5956966

Will Target's loyalty initiative work-will those 8 million card holders take advantage of the program-will loyalty drive sales growth?the answer to those questions will determine the commitment of other US retailers to smart card loyalty.
I have previously posted my reasoning for why it will..but...

It also helps to look at real world examples of recent coalition loyalty programs. One is Nectar in the UK.It is mag-stripe based but Sainsbury's has continually reported upon its success in driving increased sales.

Nectar still good for Sainsbury's in third quarter
24 Jan 2003

The third quarter trading statement for UK and US food retailer, J Sainsbury plc, shows progress on its business transformation programme, and "solid" Christmas trading figures. After introducing the Nectar loyalty card in September 2002 (which now has over 11 million active users), Sainsbury's terminated its Reward Card in November, and has consolidated all its customer data. The final data shows that Sainsbury's now has more customers using Nectar in-store than were using the firm's own loyalty card, and group CEO, Sir Peter Davis, remains confident that Nectar will continue to drive sales growth. In the UK, Sainsbury's total sales were up 4%, and 104 stores and 25 petrol stations were upgraded with new IT systems. The UK also saw 6 new stores opened, 8 stores refurbished, and 13 stores extended during the quarter. In the US, Shaw's Supermarkets total sales were up 1.2%.
