A Spanish Card Makes Air Travel Easier

A Spanish credit card issuer is offering a contactless smart card that travelers can use to pay for and board flights on Iberia Airline’s shuttle service between Madrid and Barcelona. Iberia Cards began issuing the card last November and expects to have 50,000 cards issued by the middle of this year, a company spokesperson says. A cardholder waves the card, which communicates with a reader by radio signals, in front of a kiosk at the airport to select a flight on the shuttle, which does not take advance reservations. Travelers also use the contactless chip card to board, waving it past another card reader at the gate. The card shortens lines at the ticket counter and the gate, and eliminates unnecessary payment processing as the cardholder is only charged for the ticket when it is used, says Juan Golmayo Fernandez, director general of Iberia Cards, which was formed last fall by three Spanish financial institutions and Iberia Airlines. Cards are issued in two versions. The Visa Puente Aereo has a Visa credit application on a magnetic stripe along with the contactless chip. Tickets bought with this card are charged to the credit card bill. With the Tarjeta Puente Aereo, consumers are billed through their bank accounts. The contactless chip is based on Mifare, a technology owned by Philips Semiconductors.
