Keycorp launches MULTOS Version 5 on MIFARE PROX controller range

Following the news (WN 9.4) that Philips Semiconductors would support Keycorp´s highly advanced smart-card platform, the 32K MULTOS, Keycorp has announced that it will port its MULTOS Version 5 operating system to Philips Semiconductors' MIFARE PROX dual-interface smart-card controller range.

MULTOS Version 5, combined with the MIFARE PROX smart-card controller range, supports both contactless and contact interface operations, allowing contactless transport ticketing applications, as well as existing contact banking schemes. MULTOS supports such applications as EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa Cash), credit/debit, and electronic purses, such as Mondex, PROTON and Chipper.

Keycorp´s MULTOS Version 5 operating software includes the MULTOS Version 4 standard and adds optional features such as the provision of a contactless interface for transport applications, support for GSM SIM applications, and elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) for mobilecommerce applications.

Philips Semiconductors´ MIFARE PROX has been developed also to support MULTOS Version 5, along with an emulation mode for MIFARE Classic, making it compatible with the widely installed MIFARE infrastructure. The company will manufacture and deliver the first MIFARE PROX smart-card controllers equipped with Keycorp´s MULTOS Version 5 operating system, which can then be embedded onto smart cards and supplied to card-issuing organizations.

Keycorp´s general manager of the smart-cards business, Brian McKeon, said: "Keycorp is pleased to be working with Philips Semiconductors, who will be marketing our MULTOS Version 5 to the global market. This announcement is another stage in the continuing relationship between Keycorp and Philips Semiconductors."

Karsten Ottenberg, general manager of the Identification business line, Philips Semiconductors, said "Philips Semiconductors considers this co-operation a significant step forward in developing multi-application platforms in the contactless world. We appreciate Keycorp´s trust in our competency in smart-card technology, especially in contactless and dual-interface solutions. The combination of Keycorp´s MULTOS implementation and Philips´ leading-edge MIFARE dual-interface technology will further boost the migration of contactless cards into multi-application concepts."

Keycorp´s MULTOS Version 5 and Philips Semiconductors´ MIFARE PROX smart-card processor will be generally available early in 2001.

Keycorp Limited designs, manufactures and markets complete electronic commerce solutions, incorporating smart cards, Internet commerce, and point-of-service transaction systems. Keycorp is a founding member of the MULTOS consortium, which has responsibility for developing the MULTOS multi-application smart-card operating system, and has developed a proprietary multi-application smart-card operating system, OSSCA.

MULTOS is a secure, multi-application smart-card platform. It allows products (in the form of applications) to be added to and deleted from the card. Third-party software developers can develop their own MULTOS applications, allowing them to tailor value-added services for the card user, including loyalty, ticketing, credit, debit and electronic purse. MULTOS was launched in May 1997 and has met with great success in the financial services industry. More recently, combined with PKI applications, MULTOS has become the basis of a number of world-leading e-commerce initiatives.

MIFARE is a trademark owned by Royal Philips Electronics N.V.

Cutting Edge Technology for ePurse Cards
ePurses – The Modern Alternative to Cash

An electronic purse is a convenient alternative to cash when it comes to low value transactions or where exact change or coins are required (vending machines, public transport, parking meters, etc.). It combines the advantages of cash with the security and convenience of smart cards. ePurses are often combined with applications such as electronic tickets, parking or loyalty on a multi-application platform.

G&D’s Advanced Product Line for ePurses

G&D has been a technology driver in electronic purse projects from the outset. Our product line for electronic purses, reflects our wide experience and outstanding competence:

GeldKarte/SECCOS

Proton

VisaCash

PBOC

Mondex

Quick

Danmønt

G&D also offers customer-specific closed-environment ePurses.

CEPS

The CEPS, Common Electronic Purse Specifications, represent a de facto global industry standard and define the requirements needed to implement a globally interoperable ePurse scheme.

As a world novelty, G&D has implemented the CEPS application on the open chip card operating system MULTOS™. In the name of a smart interoperable future, G&D is committed to the development of the CEPS interface for participating ePurse schemes, such as Visa, Proton, GeldKarte, Clip.

Just walk on by: ePurse Cards go Contactless

If the scope of electronic purses is to be widened to include quick and easy payment in public transport, at toll collection booths or car parks, contactless data transfer is essential.

G&D provides the technology for ePurse applications on dual interface chip cards as well as on hybrid cards.

The G&D dual interface card integrates customised open or closed
ePurses with additional applications on one chip. The card complies ISO14443 Type A and B.

The G&D hybrid card has two chips co-residing. One is a contacted chip for payment applications (ePurse, debit/credit, etc.) and the other a contactless chip for transport, access or toll collection applications. The contactless chip supports MIFARE and Legic technology.
