Date Posted: 19:34:39 01/18/03 Sat Consumers Like The Smart Card Chip, AmEx Says While not all Blue cardholders use the features on the smart card’s chip, market research shows cardholders like the fact that the chip is there, says David Bonalle, vice president and general manager of advanced payments development at American Express. "There are people using the applications, there are other people who like knowing if they want to use the applications they’re there, and there are people who like to know AmEx is innovating and want to be associated with that," Bonalle says. "The average person who has a Blue card says they do see value in having the chip on the card." Bonalle says AmEx has begun promoting the latest feature for the Blue card chip, an Internet security and convenience application called ID Keeper, through e-mails to cardholders, and will incorporate the new feature in future Blue card marketing materials and advertising. AmEx does not disclose cardholder or usage figures. But industry sources say there are about 6 million Blue credit cards in circulation and that fewer than 1% of cardholders were using the features on the smart card chip prior to last month’s launch of ID Keeper.
