Smartcard Trials In East And West
MOTOROLA, United States, is involved in field trials of smartcard ticketing systems in both eastern and western hemispheres---Nanjing, China, and Berlin, Germany.

The company has signed up for its first contract in China with a cooperative agreement with Nanjing Public Transit IC Card Co to develop an integrated smartcard system, which will cover metro, buses, and ferries in Nanjing. Passengers will buy and reload their smartcards at stationary ticketing machines located throughout the city. A three-month field trial will start in Nanjing in March.

In Berlin, the ERG Motorola Alliance has implemented the first phase of a smartcard field trial on two U-Bahn lines, the Berlin S-Bahn, the Berlin-Brandenburg system (VBB), two bus routes with 44 buses, and a Strassenbahn Line 5 with 14 vehicles and seven stations.

The "tick-et" fare system trial allows a group of 25,000 passengers to use smartcards for fare payment on the different networks. Up to 150,000 transactions per day are expected, including transfers between stations and modes of transport. The full system covering Berlin and the surrounding greater Brandenburg area could be up and running by 2002.
