I think the statement has validity. Guns, swords, etc. are phallic symbols. As a general rule women avoid them, don't feel comfortable using them, don't have the same social pressures as children to look up to them as symbols of power (distinctly masculine power).

While it is true to point out that obsessive compulsive behavior includes all sorts of other pastimes (computers, D&D minitures, cars, sneakers, etc.) most of those aren't nearly so phallic in nature. And when I say phallic I'm not just refering to shape (although is it coincidental that guns and knives aren't just phallic in nature but also in shape?), but more to an underlying masculine nature and purpose. Cars can certainly be a phallic-esque obsession for people, but it's not as deeply fundamental as a weapon. Like I said men's fascination with impliments of killing/destruction has a very long history. It predates us as a species and has it's genesis amoung the first hunter-gatherers H. habilus (and perhaps even earlier). We're talking at least a four million year old jones of penile proportions!
