- Presumably sees little upside left for his career with us and sees how people have jumped above him managing in crappier leagues with consistent European football (see e.g. Postecoglu, Amorin). He's rehabilitated his disloyalty reputation with us and the popular narrative is still he's been hamstrung by a lack of support, but that narrative is likely to slip given we've sold very few players and he's had a run of big signings for two years.   - If it's true that the new contract we've offered doubles his money and Benfica will pay half his current salary then choosing to go there seems crazy to me. They're already successful so he has no scope for improving them. A lot of IFs which may well be nonsense but if accurate then a very strange decision IMO.
