Subject: Conference League final

Last night I went with some Crystal Palace mates to the “Conference Final viewing party” – big screens set up inside Selhurst Park. This was the second time for me at SP in recent weeks, I attended their beer festival a few weeks back (it was great BTW and something similar at CC would be amazing). I also used to live basically in the shadow of the ground so it was a bit nostalgic to be back on old ends. A few things stood out to me and I am not trying to throw any shade on FFC here:

First, I am really impressed with the community connection that CPFC has built up in their part of South London. It has deepened and intensified since I lived there, Palace flags and colours are everywhere, fans wear the colours all year round. People heading up to the ground do not seem to be merely tolerated as an inconvenience, which is the feeling I get walking up Stevenage Road sometimes. Palace are doing a great job leveraging the favourable circumstances they have.

Second, we were sitting in the Holmesdale End, most will be aware that this is the main home stand at SP. It was VERY lively in there – despite the fact that only the lower tier was open and it wasn’t full, and of course loads of regulars were in Leipzig. It was so constantly loud that I wondered if stadium sound was being piped over the PA. It helped that tickets were only £5 AND we were allowed beer in the seats (it is a completely different experience watching live football with a beer in your hand), but the buzz was constant. Also their PA blasts at 125% the volume of the one at CC. I’ve not been to an away game at Palace for a long time but you can see why SP has a reputation as a fairly intimidating place to visit.

Third, that song “Glad All Over” is both extremely annoying and very effective; people know all the words to the whole song and really belt it out. And they have more than one song! Blame it on “tourists” if you like but we definitely have room to improve here.

Finally, and most importantly, I really want us to have an event like this. Palace have had a pretty dreadful season in the League, they suffered one of the biggest giant-killings ever in the FA Cup, their manager announced he was leaving in January, but they have ended on a massive high. And they will be in the Europa League next season and can expect to go deep in that competition. Meanwhile Fulham were above Palace all season in the league, but allowed the season to fizzle out tamely - when turning that limp draw at Wolves into a win would have US in the Europa League.
In the natural order of things, neither Palace nor Fulham should expect to be having European tours. When the opportunity is there, the chance has to be taken, and under Silva we have consistently failed to do so – pathetic performances in later rounds of Cups (barring maybe the semi-final against Liverpool) and flaccid outings at the business end of the league season. I’m personally not getting bent out of shape about Forest or Bournemouth or Brighton or Palace or SUNDERLAND getting into Europe, good for them (and you’ve got to love having them in Europe instead of Chelsea or Spurs). I am not convinced that the answer is “recruitment”, to me it’s more about a lack of courage or composure at key moments. I’m just very disappointed that Fulham have repeatedly spurned the opportunities that they have made for themselves.
