Laurel’s attention was immediately diverted from the new girl when she saw Isobel practically swoon to the floor. Immediately, she thought of the ghouls they had encountered, and felt certain this was the cause of the woman’s sudden illness. To her surprise, Argus stepped forward, perhaps because Valhorek was at present in the opposite cell attending Corum.

She gave a silent intake of breath as the man positioned his heads above his patient’s chest, just as any proper healer mage would do, causing a soft, golden glow to settle into Isobel’s body, presumably successfully cleaning her system of all the poison. It didn’t take long for the woman to actually sit up and smile gratefully, before offering her thanks to her benefactor. Padre, she thought, curious as always about learning something new, be it magic, music, language, or something else entirely. Her title for a priest?

She returned her attention to Argus, still marveling over his display. Why, that was twenty times as advanced as she might ever hope to be in the healing arts at present! That was the work of a master, where she was from. True, it was nothing uniquely special as far as healing went, but she simply hadn’t known what Argus had truly been capable of. Now, whether he had studied the intricacies of human and possibly elven anatomy and physiology still remained unclear; nevertheless, she was certainly happy to see they had another healer on their hands—even if she was a tiny bit jealous. But only a little. Hardly at all, really.

“Ae yew all right, La’el?” Argus suddenly asked, turning to her with a strangely dreamy look on his face. What an odd man, she thought, happily returning his smile.

“Oh! Naturally,” she assured him. She put her hands in the air and twirled a couple times as if to demonstrated every inch of her healthy self. “See?” she asked cheerfully, her cloak still swishing slightly around her legs as she came to a stop in front of him again. “Perfectly healthy, I assure you. But perhaps you might ask the others, as well. Jeremy, I think, is in need of assistance.”

At that moment, Jeremy ran forward, obviously having seen what Argus had done for Isobel. True enough, he had several scratches on his neck from the ghoul, and she hoped Argus could heal him as ably as he had healed his first patient. Not really an odd man at all, she thought, wondering at the slightly annoyed look she imagined flickering briefly on his face as Jeremy interrupted them. Rather obliging, actually. She liked him.

At this point, Erlic returned. (When had he left? Now there was a strange one, surely. She did wish she could stop liking him—or rather, stop liking him as much as she did. She was sure she would be over him in no time, however. It was simply her way.) When he announced to Jade (that was the new girl—and rather charmingly pretty, too, despite her lack of hair. Laurel imagined her with a cute printed kerchief around her head, and thought that might do the trick.) that there was clothing as well as weapons available in another room.

“Excellent!” Laurel cried, clapping her hands together. “I, too, am in need of a decent change in clothing. We women cannot stand to parade about in the same outfit for three days straight like you men do, you know. Come along, dearie, let’s go and fetch you something decent to wear.”

She beckoned to Jade, also grabbing Tia’s hand as she walked past, Rowan shooting them a hopeful look. “In your dreams, little brother,” she murmured to him, just in case he took it into his head to follow.

“Isobel, love, if you’re feeling up to it, you really ought to join us.” The woman’s outfit was wrecking havoc on the eyes of the men in the group, and she really pitied the poor creatures too much to allow such torture to continue unchecked. It would, of course, be Isobel’s ultimate decision whether or not to change clothing. But Laurel was certain she would practice the good sense she seemed to have been blessed with, and opt for a more practical ensemble.

“Now, Miss. Jade,” she said, almost playfully, her green eyes flicking slyly toward the new girl as they moved along toward the rooms housing the spare clothes and weapons, “Curiosity forces me to inquire as to what type of magic you practice. It’s terribly rude of me to ask, I know, but if you wouldn’t mind, I really am interested in knowing, being a practitioner in the arts myself.”
