In reply to: Ravin 's message, "Going off to explore" on 10:33:40 02/15/02 Fri

Once Erlic had shown the women were the room was, he was surprised by everyone’s raptness into finding clothes. Obviously it was a key ingredient in keeping them happy. Somehow, Erlic couldn’t see their point, but then again, what did he know.

He decided to do some exploring of his own since it seemed that everyone, at least for the moment was safe. He past by the door where he spotted Ravin, and decided to enter. His friend was sitting on the bed, and trying to bandage his hand with a rag.

“What’s with the rag?” Erlic asked. Ravin answered his query by telling him about the magic trap he stumbled upon. Erlic quickly dug into his pack, and pulled out a salve. “Here,” he stated. “Wipe this on your hands. It’ll help ease the burn. Mind if I have a look around?”

“Help yourself,” Ravin answered. “Better use this, you don’t want to end up with my handicap.” Ravin tossed him the gem, and Erlic smiled at his friend. He still had his gloves on, and held the gem to the chest. Amazingly it glowed, proving that it was indeed magically trapped. “You were right,” Erlic told Ravin. “This one is definitely trapped magically.”

Erlic touched the gem to the chest, and nothing happened. When he placed the gem closer to it again, it radiated no glow whatsoever. He tossed the gem back to Ravin who caught it easily. Erlic then touched the chest, and to his relief, nothing happened. He did, however, find a little needle imbedded near the lock. He quickly un-trapped it, and with his lock pick tools, managed to open the chest.

Erlic said nothing for many moments. “I think you’d better look at this,” Erlic said to his friend. Ravin came over, and simply stared. Both men were silent for a while before Erlic spoke up. “You think whoever had this was saving it for a rainy day?” Ravin simply looked at his friend. Inside, the chest was filled with gems, gold, and a variety of priceless items.

Without saying a word, both men went over to the other chest. Since Ravin had the gem, he checked it out, and no glow came from the magically enchanted gem. Since Erlic still had his tools out, Ravin allowed him to check for alternate traps. Nothing could be found. When it was opened, both men found an assortment of various tomes inside.

Erlic knew that Ravin couldn’t read, so he went to examine one of the tomes. He was immediately knocked back several feet, landing against the wall. Ravin quickly went over to Erlic, and extended his hand. “It was trapped wasn’t it.” It wasn’t a question, rather a statement. Erlic simply smiled, and allowed Ravin to help him up. He staggered at first, but then quickly caught himself. Whatever was in that chest was awfully important. No wonder the outside of the chest hadn’t been trapped.

“Well,” Erlic exclaimed. “Can’t have everything now can we?” Both men decided they were better off trying to figure out what to do with all the wealth stored in the one chest. “Still,” Erlic commented. “Why would anyone bother to place a magical trap on tomes, unless they were quite valuable…..or dangerous?”
