The last thing Tristan was expecting was for Marz to take his teasing suggestion to heart. His jaw dropped as he watched him jump off the bed and race toward the closet door, shutting and locking it behind Corum and Barry before rushing to do the same to the main door leading to the hallway. That done, he made his way back toward the bed, pulling his shirt over his head and hopping on one foot to yank off his boot.

“You’re crazy,” Tristan said, starting to laugh a little nervously as he backed up a bit. Marz only grinned at him before lunging forward and tackling him against the mattress, not really giving him a chance to argue the practicality of what they were doing. All he could think about was removing his swordbelt as fast as possible, so Marz wouldn’t get skewered in the process. His fingers trembled ridiculously, but fortunately his lover’s skilled hands came to the rescue, and they could get down to business in record time.

Tristan tried to keep it in mind that Corum and Barry were only a few feet away, locked in the closet, capable of hearing every single passion-induced noise they made, but it really was impossible to hold back while being with Marz. For a few, mind-numbing seconds, he felt it again—that brief, drunken sense of nirvana, a fleeting glimpse of ultimate love and pleasure. But it fled the moment they finished, panting like the idiots they were in each other’s arms. Tristan could almost cry, now that he knew what it was he was missing. Fortunately, Marz chased his confusion away with a series of gentle kisses, which he was happy to receive, eager to extend the intimacy between them for as long as possible.

He mumbled something nonsensical when they heard a knock on the door, too caught up in the moment to really care about where they were and what was going on around them. But when Corum suddenly burst into the room, keys jangling in his hand, Tristan actually yelped, immediately feeling himself tense up all over. Marz wasn’t too pleased, either, judging from the expression on his face, and he tossed Tristan a rather tolerant look before rolling away from him and quickly pulling on his clothes again.

“That’s it!” Tristan hissed as he pulled his pants up and swiftly buckled his sword on again. “I’ve never been so humiliated in my entire life! I can’t believe we just did that, right here, with him walking in…”

He was so utterly embarrassed he couldn’t even speak anymore, pulling his reddened face through the hole in his shirt and doing the laces over his chest with quick, violent gestures. How the hell had Corum managed to get from the closet to the other door, anyway? Had he come through while they were…while they were busy…?

“Ohhh,” he moaned, covering his face with one hand. He would just have to try not to think about it, that’s all. “This is all your fault,” he added sulkily as they left the room. “I refuse to have sex with you, ever again!” Marz only chuckled and told him to shut up as he dropped an arm around his shoulders, leading them down the hall to where the others were mostly waiting. To his great shame, Tristan actually smiled in spite of himself, thinking, well, it could have been worse. It could have been Erlic walking in on them.

Rowan literally couldn’t believe his luck when Tia gulped down her wine and grabbed his hand, dragging him down the hall and into the dressing room. Oh sweet gods, he thought, an incredulous smile plastered onto his face. He was gonna get lucky with two different people in the same day! One right after the other! And there wasn’t even any money involved at all, period!

He was too thrilled with himself to say anything to Tia as she pushed him down into the mound of clothes before crawling on top of him. He didn’t feel the need to say anything when they kissed, his body arching to meet hers as he wrapped his arms briefly around her tiny back. He was too stunned by her aggressiveness to return the favor when she began untying his shirt, with her teeth! her hands continuing to fool him into thinking she must be experienced as they did a bit of roaming on their own.

He wasn’t generally a passive lover, but this really was too great to be true. Unfortunately, Tia decided the footsteps running down the hall must indicate something important, and she jumped away from him as quickly as she’d sprung on top of him before gathering her back and heading for the door.

“Oh baby, come on, it won’t take long,” he pleaded, but she wasn’t listening, calling for him to get his lazy butt up and follow before they got left behind. “Well it’s not that easy for me, you know!” he called after her as she sprinted merrily out of the room, the usual spritely spring to her step.

He grumbled a little to himself as he lay there, slowly tying his shirt and straightening his clothes before finally standing. When he felt he was sufficiently back to normal—although just thinking about her set his whole body raging again—he made his way back to the kitchen, where he grabbed his own pack and waited for the whole group to arrive so that they could continue onward.

Once the call was made for them to resume exploring the ruins of the Twilight City, Laurel shouldered her back and bow, making sure that the weapon was secure and ready to be strung at a moment’s notice. Feeling as if she were readying to take one of the exams at school, she mentally ran through a series of basic spells, too, just in case she’d need a couple things waiting on the tip of her tongue should disaster attempt to strike.

As they filed out the building, she bit her lip to hide her smile and rushed to walk beside Argus, bolding taking his hand as they walked side by side. He looked startled, and flashed her those beautiful blue eyes of his, that dopey, out of this world expression passing over his face. Ye gods, it made a girl feel special to be looked at like that!

“I thought we should walk in pairs,” she said, smiling airily as they marched cautiously along. “It’s dangerous in this place, don’t you think so? Perhaps it would be safer if we adopted the buddy system while exploring.” Shamelessly, she turned her head and batted her eyelashes at him, swinging their clasped hands as they walked. “Will you be my buddy, Argus?”

They came upon the temple Daraba and Ardesmar had indicated almost immediately. Laurel dropped her flirtatious manner for a moment, gazing about at the intricate architecture of the doomed building with wonder, her mind immediately finding and greeting the bats hanging from the ceiling. They sent lazy images of blood and hunger back to her, and she warned them cautiously that they’d best seek their dinners elsewhere.

They weren’t long exploring before Ravin suddenly called for them to look out, his arms moving to cover his head as a huge pile of rubble collapsed from the ceiling, hurtling down toward him and the few who were closest to him. Immediately, Laurel threw her hands up into the air and yelled out a spell, slowing the fall of the rocks and momentarily drastically lightening their weight before they settled heavily on the ground, burying several of her friends.

Up ahead, the bats screeched, both aloud and in her head, and she pushed her hands uselessly to her ears, gritting her teeth. Seconds later, they were all plunged into darkness as Jeremy’s torch suddenly went out. Naturally, people began calling to one another, and she felt several hands reaching out to feel her cloak as she instinctively did the same.

Shaking her head at her slow thinking, she abruptly uttered the words to the same tiny spell she’d used early while exploring the underground tunnel housing the Elemental. A little magelight erupted above her head, sending out yellow sparks of light as it bobbed slightly in the air. She repeated the words several time, making various lights spring up, though with each call she could feel her magic draining—for fire magic was her weakest point.

Ahead, the bats screeched again, and Laurel strongly urged them with her mind to turn away. For now, they listened, but it took great effort, and she was feeling awfully weak. This was no time to collapse in a courtly faint, however, and she quickly rushed with some of the others toward the pile of rubble near the center of the room.

Rowan groaned and lifted his head from the floor, blinking at the sparks of light that kept appearing to cloud his vision. He tried to sit up but changed his mind when the pounding in his head almost knocked him unconscious again. There was something on his arm…below his elbow…gods, it felt like someone had sliced him through with a sword thrust or something! He twisted his head slightly and groaned again. A piece of shale was imbedded into his arm, the point actually barely sticking out on the other side.

He winced when light erupted in the tunnel again, recognizing the golden orbs bobbing in the distance as his sister’s magelights. With great will and effort, he managed to sit up, cradling his injured arm to his chest and rubbing at his bruised head with his other hand. Anxiously, he glanced at the pile of rocks surrounding him. He was damned lucky he wasn’t more seriously injured. Automatically, he thought of Ravin, who had been only a few feet in front of him before the rock fall had begun. Just the thought of calling out and raising his own voice made his head hurt, though, so he just sat there, waiting for the others to find him first.
