In reply to: Argus and Barry 's message, "You're a fine one to talk!" on 13:49:16 01/24/02 Thu

Laurel backed up along with everyone else when the jewels surrounding the outer edges of the mirror began to shine brightly. It became so piercingly bright that she had to shield her eyes with her arm for a few brief seconds. When it was over, she looked down to stare at the man sprawled out on the sand, still blinking tears out of her eyes.

It was difficult to resist the impulse to rush toward him and help him up. However, they didn’t even really know what this man was, let alone who he was. He could even be dangerous, so it was best to remain cautious. She felt Erlic would be especially proud of her for thinking that. Maybe he wouldn’t feel the need to lecture to her and warn her about certain things if he realized that she really did have a head on her shoulders.

As soon as the man sat up and started speaking however, most thoughts of him being evil fled her mind. People who consorted with black mages and evil demons usually had a decent command of the Common Tongue, at least in her experience. She pursed her lips and regarded the man, shaking her head solemnly. Poor creature. Must be heat stroke, or some other form of dementia. Hopefully only a temporary ailment, too.

She looked over her shoulder when Ravin and Saras ran up behind them, both staring curiously at the new man. Ravin looked a bit put out, and she saw him quietly sheathe a dagger when he seemed to realize nothing was going on. Poor Saras looked utterly petrified, though.

Finally, the strange man with the scraggly hair finally uttered a word she could understand. Water. Or actually, “wati,” or something closely resembling that, anyway. Sighing resignedly, she turned and walked back to the camp and retrieved a giant-sized cup from one of the Jann, returning back five minutes later to where everyone was still gathered around the newcomer. Barry was actually speaking to him, and seemed to understand his language, which was rather hard to believe.

After filling the cup with pond water, and muttering a spell over it to make sure it was purified and drinkable, she walked up to the man and handed him the cup.

“Here…is…your…water,” she said carefully, smiling kindly as he took it from her. She tried to speak slowly so the poor fool could understand her, since it seemed obvious to her that he was a bit slow in the head.

She backed away then, almost tripping on Mikoshi, who was once again rubbing against her legs. She shooed the cat away, the creature giving her an almost indignant look as it stalked off. Mikoshi immediately began purring again as she made her way past the feet of the others, rubbing successfully against them as she went. Hopefully, they were all cat-lovers, Laurel thought anxiously, before returning her attention to Argus.

“Drink it slowly,” she cautioned, praying he could understand her. The poor man was obviously thick in the brain. Honestly, one could not expect much from dirty men who made a habit of hopping out of mirrors.
