Subject: Time to get the healer
In reply to: Ravin 's message, "Helping Tristan and Corum" on 12:58:30 12/18/01 Tue

Ravin decided to use the shurikens because the beast's tentacles made it nearly impossible to get close enough to its body for a decent sword strike. The constant hacking away at tentacles that seemed to be slowly regenerating wouldn't get them anywhere fast. He launched a shuriken just as Erlic shouted out, telling him not to do so. Ravin winced at the deep cut he received on his hand that started to bleed profusely. Obviously, the older thief was able to tell immediately that he didn't know how to handle the sharp projectiles without hurting himself in the process.

Thinking it wise to adhere to Erlic's advice, Ravin forfeited the idea of using any more shurikens. After tearing a dirty strip of cloth off the bottom of his shirt, he wrapped it haphazardly around his hand then returned to slashing at tentacles with his sword.

He was shocked to see Isobel bring Marz up from beneath the water simply because he had no idea the youth had been down there. His empathy flooded him with feelings of stress and pain, making it impossible to single out any specific source for the emotions. He was also unaware of Tristan being chained in place, and wondered why the dragon hardly moved at all during the battle. Shortly after Erlic reached the youth's side, things changed. After mouthing a thank you to the older thief for something, Tristan scrambled from the water, rushing to Marz's side.

A quizzical expression crossed Ravin's face when he saw Barry shoot out of the beast's single eye. How in hades had the skull ended up in the orb in the first place? It was virtually impossible to keep track of everything that went on during battle, so Ravin gave up trying.

His sword cut through another tentacle just as the water in the stream heaved up, tossing Corum and Tia to the shore. The thief's eyes flew to Laura, whose voice filled the chamber with archaic words. Talented woman! he thought, when he saw stalactites rain down upon the monster. Ravin thought his head would explode when the beast let out a horrendous scream of agony. Automatically, his hands flew up to cover his ears while he prayed for blessed silence to return quickly.

Isobel drew his attention when she leapt into the water to finish off the weakened beast. My daggers! Ravin dropped his sword and dove into the stream. He swam under the murky water like a madman, and managed to retrieve his beloved knives before the creature sunk into an underground passageway.

Ravin sucked in a deep breath once he surfaced then crawled out of the stream, coming up behind Isobel. Although he didn't understand what she was saying to the native woman, the words sounded quite hostile. He jumped slightly when she backhanded the woman before calling her a bitch and threatening her. When she raised her sword, Ravin was about to stop her from using it, but Erlic saved him the effort.

"The hospitality of these people leaves something to be desired, Frio!" she said.

Ravin stared at her for a moment, somewhat stunned by her venomous nature. I'd hate to get on her bad side, he thought before going off to retrieve his sword. When he saw piles of clothing near the edge of the water, he decided to make himself useful. Obviously, they belonged to Marz, Tristan, and Corum since they were the only naked men in the cavern. He gathered the items into his arms and brought them over to Marz and Tristan. He deposited his burden before them, grinning when Corum rushed forth to grab a pair of trousers.

"I think it might be a good idea to return to the campfire where we can dry off and have Val take a look at any injuries," he called out, before making his way out of the cave. Upon seeing Justin lying on the ground he bent down and placed two fingers on the man's neck. His pulse was strong and his breathing seemed normal. A small bruise on the side of his head told Ravin that he had been knocked out after a fall. Another injured person for Val to check out.

The tribal leader rushed up to Ravin then and began to apologize profusely for the stupid behavior of the women in the cave. He explained that the tribe knew about the beast that lived in the stream and fed it wild goats and boar occasionally to keep it pacified. "It then leave us alone, and we can safely use water for bathing and other things."

"Any other dangers around here that we should know about?" Ravin asked.

The tribal leader shook his head, but the thief sensed he wasn't being completely truthful.

"No more beasts here," the man said. "Only wolves and mountain denizens to worry about. I put guards around camp for night to warn of any danger that might come."

Before Ravin could question the man further, he hurried away to speak with the members of his tribe. The thief sat down by one of the blazing campfires and pulled out his ale flask. After taking a long drink, he removed the bloody cloth from his hand. The cut was deep and would need stitches.

Feeling quite weary from the day's events, he rose and made his way to the opening of the cave housing Val and Alakbar. The healer came out shortly after Ravin called his name. The thief gave him a quick run down of what transpired in the cavern with the beast. "Better get your medicine bag," he said. "You'll have a number of patients gathered around the campfire soon."

When Val ducked back into the cave to get his bag, Ravin returned to his spot by the fire. Now that the heat of battle was over, he found himself shivering in the cool night air. He took another drink from his flask then moved closer to the fire, feeling very much like a drowned rat at the moment.
