Author: Rowan and Tristan
Subject: Night, then morning again

Rowan laughed softly when Jeremy came up to him, asking him if he wanted to share a cave for the night. Obviously, he didn’t know about poor Tia’s condition, meaning that Rowan would never ever consider leaving her side in the middle of the night while she slept unprotected out in the open!

“Yes, yes, Tia,” he teasingly agreed, getting up to fetch a few thick blankets from some of the empty caves. “Jeremy and I can just crash with the kraken tonight, and you just holler if you need us. Then if any of those assassins decide to make their move tonight, we’ll hopefully make it back in time to hear you shout ‘Farewell!’ as they drag you off into the bushes.”

He was still chuckling to himself as he gathered the blankets and hurried back over to the fireside, spreading the furs out on the ground and draping one around Tia. From the look on her confused face, he could tell she thought he was being serious a moment ago, and he couldn’t help laughing again, then patting her hand and kissing her forehead.

“If you want to be a brave boy,” he said, glancing up at Jeremy as he slouched beside her, “You can forsake those comfy caves and stay here with me tonight.” He grinned a bit rakishly. “She’s not much of a lady, but I’m no knight, anyway, and we love her just the same, don’t we?”

He gave Tia another kiss and a brief little hug before stretching out more comfortably, folding his hands behind his head and kicking off his boots as he gazed at the fire. The flicking light of the flames played tricks with his eyes, lulling him to sleep, and within minutes he was snoring lightly, dreaming of nobly defending his pretty young friend from thousands upon thousands of black-garbed assassins who fell like waves before his skilled hands.

~*~*~*~*~

Tristan was awakened abruptly in the night by the feel of something shifting violently beside him. He opened his slightly glowing eyes to stare into the near darkness up at Marz, who was sitting up for some reason. It was far too dark to make out his expression, though, thanks to the impromptu door they’d created before going to sleep. But the rare scent of very faint fear brushing against his senses along with the sounds of hard breathing made him understand what had happened.

He was used to Marz’s nightmares by now, though it always took him a few seconds to fully realize what was going on. Marz didn’t usually remember anything by morning, anyway, but Tristan had gotten good at settling him down again so he could drift back to sleep.

“It’s okay now,” he whispered sleepily, slowly sitting up beside him. He brushed the sweaty hair out of his lover’s wide eyes and pushed him gently back down, stifling a yawn as he did so. Marz complied, the way he usually did.

“You’re safe now,” Tristan muttered, mistakenly thinking the nightmare had been related to Sistino, as Marz sometimes cried the name out in his sleep. He would know better than to discuss what had happened in the morning, since he would only end up getting a blank look, indicating that either the nightmare wasn't to be acknowledged or had simply been forgotten. With another yawn, he huddled close under the blankets and closed his eyes, drifting back easily into sleep.

When morning came, he awoke with another start, although Marz still appeared to be sleeping soundly beside him. Something ticked like a warning in the back of his head, irritating him until he could finally place his finger on it.

“Oh,” he said, a look of worry passing over his features. He turned to wake Marz, shaking him and saying softly, “Wake up! We can’t laze about today…Erlic will want us out of here as soon as possible.”

He frowned and sat up, stretching resolutely. He couldn’t remember the last time he got to stay in bed as long as he wanted, instead of jumping to his feet to hurry off and do this or do that. Sometimes he wished Marz would decide to leave this group, take a vacation or something, so they could take their time with things, the way dragons liked to do them. He sighed wistfully, though, knowing full well that sort of thing was just a dream…and a rather silly one at that.
