Subject: The first mistake, you mean!
In reply to: Marz 's message, "Earth, Root, Masculine, Solid, Red, Yang--The first Chakra" on 10:26:10 12/28/01 Fri

Tristan was glad to hear that Marz apparently knew a lot about the chakras from Erlic. At least he seemed to know a lot about them, anyway. He started to talk about that Chi stuff again, and Tristan had to refrain mightily from rolling his eyes at him. Why the hell was Erlic going around calling magic by another name? It made no sense to him, especially since it appeared to be confusing the hell out of Marz (who still seemed quite certain he didn’t have anything to do with magic). Then again, it wasn’t all that difficult, confusing Marz, though it still grated on Tristan’s nerves.

He perked up when the gold dragons were mentioned. So Marz had met other dragons besides him and Naiomi? Panic seized him suddenly, and he wondered if it were likely he might run into one of them at some point in the future. Maybe not, though. He decided that since he hadn’t met any yet (besides Naiomi), then he didn’t stand much chance of meeting any later on. He allowed himself to relax again, and to listen to what Marz was saying about the Chi thing.

After a minute, he started to grow bored with Marz’s idle chitchat, and when he was asked if they should just get on with it, he nodded eagerly. Marz responded quickly, dropping into a trance with surprising ease. Tristan felt the air bristle slightly with strong magic, and he had to blink several times to make sure his eyes weren’t playing tricks on him when Marz actually started floating!

Tristan shifted uncomfortably, starting to get a little nervous. That never happened to him when he was in a trance. Course, he hadn’t been trying to find any chakra thingies, either. It was really weird, watching Marz hover in midair like that, even if it was just an inch or so off the ground. Tristan wrinkled his nose as the magic in the air increased, sending a spicy, burning scent into the air. This was Marz’s magic mingled with something else, and he watched on with increasing interest.

Several minutes later, though, he began to grow worried again. The look of peace had begun to falter on Marz’s previously slack face; now there was a slight line furrowed between his brows, and his mouth was curved into a small frown. Beads of sweat broke out on his forehead, and he started to clench and unclench his fists before pawing, ever so slightly, at the air like a cat.

Tristan jerked violently when Marz screamed, a sense of foreboding creeping steadily around his insides. He watched frantically as his friend’s breathing increased rapidly, and then he shouted again, screaming “No!” as if he were trying to fend someone or something off.

For a minute, Tristan was completely paralyzed with fear. What the hell had gone wrong? A second later, he shook his head quickly; it didn’t matter, he just had to shake Marz out of his trance. But how? He knew the right thing to do was to go and get Erlic. But that would just be proving to Marz’s teacher that they’d screwed up yet again. He thought of Corum but dismissed the idea immediately, unless they could use Yorik to smack Marz back into reality. Too violent, that, but then Tristan thought of fetching a bucket of water and tossing it into Marz’s face—only the nearest lake was deep into the mountain, where the monster had been slain.

“Shit!” he said, bouncing nervously in place. “What am I supposed to do? Damn, damn, damn…wake up, Marz!” The verbal prodding didn’t seem to help any, though, as his lover’s face had contorted into even greater expressions of fear and panic. Tristan crawled toward him, quickly closing the gap between them, and placed his hands on Marz’s shoulders. He shook him a few times, but it didn’t seem to help. Maybe Marz was too far gone into the trance. Maybe Tristan just wasn’t experienced enough to help him out. Maybe they should never have done this in the first place, and he should have waited for Erlic, and now Marz was going to get lost within himself or something, and it was all going to be Tristan’s fault—

He growled at himself and snapped out of his mental tirade, instead focusing his eyes on Marz’s blankly staring ones. Well, this would probably be a big mistake, but there was really only one thing he could do. Closing his own eyes, he passed easily into the meditative trance, and once again veered toward the burning inferno that was Marz’s mind. He had a lot more control than the previous times, though, as this time he wasn’t trying to fix anything, just find Marz and bring him back. When he found him, Tristan had the oddest sensation of wrapping both his arms and his wings around the insubstantial substance of his friend and pulling him back out of his own mind and into his rightful body. It was a strange sensation, since Marz hadn’t really left his body, only gotten too deeply buried in his own mind.

When Tristan opened his eyes, he was staring at Marz, and for a moment, Marz merely returned his gaze with his own tear-filled one. Tristan was shocked when his lover engulfed him in a crushing hug, burying his suddenly pale face into his shoulder as if he’d been frightened out of his life.

“It’s okay,” Tristan said awkwardly, but after a few seconds, he put his arms around him and hugged him back, saying more soothing things into his ear. Once he realized Marz was mostly okay, he wasn’t so scared anymore, and he tried his best to settle him back down. He wondered just what the hell Marz had experienced while in the trance to freak him like this, but decided that would have to wait until later. Besides, he knew Erlic would come flying through the cave entrance any second now, wondering what had happened to his student. He should just work on quieting Marz down enough so that he could explain things better.

“It’s all right,” he continued to whisper, slowly rocking back and forth. “You’re fine now, Marz, so just calm down and everything’ll be okay again.”
