Subject: You Say You Wanna Boycott: Savage vs GLAAD

Forget about French boycotts. Those companies just have the disadvantage of being under the wrong flag right now. No, the companies to boycott are the truly spineless, evil wimps: Now I can't get that Dell computer I was going to pick up. Looks like the cowards at Dell and Procter & Gamble have backed out of sponsoring Michael Savage's MSNBC show - and they weren't even specifically sponsoring the show, but apparently they instructed MSNBC not to run their ads during the Savage broadcast. Why? Because the tender ears of GLAAD (Gays Lashing out Against Accurate Discourse) can't tolerate any speech that might question their 'gays are always persecuted and always the underdogs and we won't stop until you admit that heterosexuality is a cop-out and is going out of style...' agenda. What are they afraid of? A weak case that people might not buy into if it was disputed often enough?

Christ, what are gays, 2 - 5% of the population tops? What the hell is wrong with the spineless morons at these companies anyway? They believe what GLAAD is alleging? Have they ever listened to Savage? This GLAAD group wouldn't be able to articulate the truth if it was shoved headfirst up their... well, let me get to the point here before Surf electronically flushes this...

According to a story at advocate.com (the website of the gay-oriented The Advocate), the following companies have stated that they will not support Savage's program: Procter & Gamble, Dell Computer Corporation, Casual Male, Idea Village, Cole Media Group, and the Sharper Image, Kraft Foods and General Mills.

Supposedly this is due to their being informed, courtesy of GLAAD, of Savage's "attacks on women, people of color, immigrants, and gay men and lesbians." People of color?? What the F is that? If you could see my usually-pink face right now, you'd call me a 'person of color', but I don't think that's what these offensive simpletons had in mind.

At any rate, if you want to boycott someone who richly needs to be boycotted, don't worry about the Frenchies. They'll be paying for their particular brand of graft-driven arrogance for years to come. (Won't it be rich when we're deconstructing the French-Iraq business relationship from the US Directorate in Rumsfeld City [formerly Baghdad])

No, these slimy, spineless excuses for companies, these impediments to free speech, these principle challenged weasils have it coming. Sorry, Dell. I've gotta go find out if Gateway has a spine. I already know where you go down.. - I mean 'come down', on this issue.

I have to go take a cold bath now. See you Sunday at Valley Forge.

OK Jackass. I’ve really had it with you uneducated, unsophisticated, blue-collar idiots. The reason the “liberal media” allegedly supports gay rights is so people like you who are unable to think for yourselves don’t go out and attack people who are not like you. Take the story about two gay males who sodomized and murdered the little boy a few years ago. Big Dom ranted and raved that the “liberal” media wouldn’t cover it to protect the gay movement. No, they wouldn’t cover it because if they did, every stupid, blue-collar drunken idiot in America would pick a guy who even looks gay and beat him to a pulp. Now there is class and sophistication. Yea, I guess gays like little boys (can you hear me Boy Scouts?). I guess that means that I as a heterosexual like 8-year-old girls? I’m glad you people have talk radio, it keeps you in your homes (or is that trailers?)

[> [> Finally! Some Reaction! Granted, Not The Best Specimen We Could Have Come Up With, But We Have To Start Somewhere! -- Scott Tilde, 21:28:59 03/22/03 Sat

Since I'm hard up for people to debate here, I'll ignore your class warfare fetish and go to to the heart of your "argument": If we don't assign gays 'special' protection ('hate' crime legislation and special group status in laws), then obviously people are going to attack them left and right. Ignoring the fact that that doesn't happen, and that an attacked gay is just as aggrieved as an attacked anybody-else, you allege that the press must ignore some real crime stories and push others, else there would certainly be gay lynchings! My God, if anyone hears Michael Savage suggest that the gay lobby is irrational in their demands, gays will be attacked by everyone in the streets!

You must live in a frightened little world, unaffected by the reality around you. Oh, we have to slant press coverage to protect us from all the homophobe blue collar knuckle-draggers who can't handle the truth!! Hint: You don't try to change the facts (i.e. "lie") just because there's a slight possibility that some moron might try to commit a crime. You foster an atmosphere where that's unacceptable by arresting the moron and punishing him as appropriate. You don't bawl over him because his lawyer told you his IQ might be low.... and you don't adjust his sentence because his victim was or was not gay, black, an AIDs carrier, female, transsexual or suffering from the heartbreak of psoriasis! - unless you think those 'special' victims are somehow more important than the rest of humanity (they're not).

As for the Boy Scouts, as a private organization, they have every right to decide that they won't allow gays to lead young boys on overnight camping trips, just as you might, had you any common sense, decide not to hire an 18 year old male to babysit your 11-year old daughter.

Of course, a bleeding-heart type might hire a homeless person off the street to be a babysitter. How progressive and 'tolerant'. Talk to the Smarts in Utah to find out what a really freakin' great idea that is.

MARCH 8, 2003 -- A SAD DAY IN TELEVISION HISTORY

Washington, D.C., March 7, 2003: The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC) has objected to MSNBC's unprecedented decision to become the first national television channel to give a white supremacist a regularly scheduled program.

The program is "The Michael Savage Show", which is scheduled to air Saturdays starting tomorrow, March 8, 2003.

MMTC, founded in 1986, represents 51 national organizations in matters involving media and telecommunications law. MMTC was asked by some of these organizations to take a stand regarding the Savage program.

In its 17 year history, this is the first time MMTC has ever objected to a particular show.

Savage claims he will have "total editorial control" of the television show, whose content "is going to be like my radio program" (Radio & Records, 2/28/03, p. 18). On that radio program and in other public statements, Mr. Savage has amassed a very long paper trail of extremely offensive attacks on racial minorities (see below for examples).

According to David Honig, MMTC Executive Director, "MSNBC's announcement that it will carry Mr. Savage's program was especially astonishing to MMTC, which has always admired NBC's well known policies of equal opportunity and NBC's generous and unwavering support of minority advancement in education and in the media industries. Indeed, NBC was the first network to bring the cause of racial justice to a national audience when it broadcast the 1939 Lincoln Memorial Concert of Marian Anderson a concert organized by Eleanor Roosevelt after the DAR Constitution Hall refused to integrate its stage. Since that day, NBC has brought us so many firsts most notably its award-winning coverage of the civil rights movement, and its pioneering and highly successful programs like the Cosby Show and A Different World. In 2002, NBC was the first Anglo network to buy a Spanish-language network, Telemundo. Thus, NBC quite properly has confidence in its ability to build its corporate success on the diversity of its audience."

"Unfortunately, MSNBC's decision to be the first to air a white supremacist television show threatens to wipe out the reputation for integrity, good will and fair play that NBC has carefully built for three generations."

"Almost always, equal opportunity in media ownership and employment are the best ways to protect the integrity of public discourse. The exception that proves the rule is a program like Savage's. Unlike other talk radio programs -- liberal and conservative -- Savage's show is so infected by prejudice and hate that its content cannot be dignified as being debatable. Imagine trying to 'debate' the assertion that Chinese people are 'little devils,' that Korean-Americans 'grill dogs' to eat, that Latinos 'breed like rabbits,' that Muslims 'created nothing in a thousand years,' or that American children shot by guns are 'ghetto slime.'"

Finally, Honig noted that "in light of the role our nation seeks to play in world affairs, this is the worst time in our history to inflame public opinion against minority groups, or to give MSNBC's viewers around the world the false impression that our great media companies believe that white supremacy falls within the bounds of reasonable debate."

AN AGGREGATION OF WHITE SUPREMACY
IN THE PAPER TRAIL OF MICHAEL SAVAGE

On the day before Yom Kippur in 1999, Savage played tapes of Adolf Hitler's speeches over German military music.

Savage suggested that homeless people are "living rats" who should be run off the streets and put in state hospitals.

Referring to Asians as "little soy eaters" and Chinese people "little devils," Savage called for dropping nuclear weapons on China and said that Chinese-Americans should be put in internment camps if they wouldn't sign loyalty oaths.

Savage declared that "the next time you're in your backyard grilling hot dogs, don't be surprised if your Korean neighbor is actually grilling his dog. That's the way things are done in Korea."

Pronouncing Trent Lott's endorsement of Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential candidacy "innocent comments," Savage nonetheless labeled the members of the Congressional Black Caucus who voiced opposition to the comments "a lynch mob" -- even though it was Thurmond's campaign that opposed antilynching laws.

Savage referred to the National Council of La Raza as "a racist group," the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) as "an Anti-American racist group," and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund as "an antiwhite pressure group." He used the term "radical front group" to attack the League of Women Voters and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

Savage is reported to have said that the "liberal media" was covering up the fact that James Byrd, the black Texan who was murdered and then dragged behind a truck, was a coke dealer and his murder was an attempted sale gone bad.

Savage has characterized Mahatma Gandhi as a "diaper-wearing moron" who was responsible for the 1947 split between India and Pakistan (which Gandhi actually opposed).

On CNN's "Talkback Live," Savage told Charles Barkley, who was considering a bid for the Republican nomination for Governor of Alabama, "You're a dumb basketball player. Go dribble a ball. Go dribble a ball. You couldn't shine my shoes, buster."

Discussing the government's use of media during World War II, Savage declared "we need racist stereotypes right now of our enemy in order to encourage our warriors to kill the enemy."

According to Savage, Muslims "created nothing in a thousand years. They cut throats and blow things up....The women just want to have mustaches and wear veils."

Savage routinely refers to non-white countries as "turd world nations," and declared that "geese are like immigrants. You open the door to them and the next thing you know, they are defecating on your country and breeding out of control."

Savage expressed this opinion of nonwhites: "as long as [non-whites] are uncomfortable in a clean environment run by 'uptight' white people, there's going to be racism. But as soon as America starts to look and stink like the Third World, they'll feel more at home."

Commenting on the May, 2000 "Million Mom March" in favor of gun control (which he characterized as the "Million Dyke March") he dismissed organizations' references to American children killed by guns: "They're not kids, they're ghetto slime...they're the same kids that are in Sierra Leone toting AK47s."

Savage expressed this opinion of Hispanic Americans: "with the {Latino] population that has emerged, since they breed like rabbits, in many cases the whites will become a minority in their own nation...The white people don't breed as often for whatever reason. I guess many homosexuals are involved. That is also part of the grand plan, to push homosexuality to cut down on the white race."

[> Amusing... these companies make a decision to boycott Savage. You get mad at them for boycotting, and what do you suggest as a reaction? A boycott. Personally, I think the companies AND you are both right: you've decided not spend your money to support things you disagree with. Sounds like the American way to me. -- "Vince From Villanova" (Can I boycott boycotts?), 10:07:02 03/23/03 Sun

So while my stand is based on my principles and what I believe is right, the 'fraidy-cat advertisers' bailout is based on fear. Fear of diminished sales maybe, but fear nonetheless. So by showing the companies that merely avoiding the situation does not automatically shield them from a negative sales impact, they may be forced to confront the issues. [> [> [> [> [> Not completely sure, but that might be the silliest thing I've seen here. You want to boycott companies for NOT sponsoring a show. Let's all let that sink it for a minute shall we? Maybe we should also insist that that pay double the normal rate in order to avoid this boycott. Better yet, lets just insist that they send Savage the money directly, and sell the time to somebody else! -- Rockford- (whew), 15:10:35 03/25/03 Tue
