Subject: wpht weekend overnight programming pure torture

I am going to find another radio station! I work the overnight shift and depend on talk radio for intelligent information and interesting subjects. I enjoyed the different topics that Coast to Coast introduced and it made the nights go by much faster. Now WPHT has decided to run infomercials all night long! I am not kidding when I say that both Saturday and Sunday nights were boring infomercials running at half hour intervals covering everything from puny prostates, anti aging, brain enhancers, to phyto chemicals and sexual enhancers. And....when they ran out of infomercials they just replayed the same lot all over again. I can't believe it. Do they really think that regulars like me will continue to listen weekend after weekend? Not me. WPHT's pulse is weak.

[> This may make a lot of people very happy but I'm ready to blow my brains out after having to put up with what passes for talk programming at that hour. Whether info's or some alien abducted, anal probed, guest on that crap to crap show ... it's enough to make suicide look good. MY feedback shows a continuing downward trend for listeners, they are drifting away. -- Surf - puts gun back in holster, breathes deeply, 18:25:12 01/29/03 Wed

[> [> The anal probe line is funny (but not accurate - you're probably thinking South Park). Guests like Dr. Michio Kaku, Richard Hoageland, Linda Moulton Howe, Whitley Strieber etc. are all very credible. The wackos represent a very small portion of the programming - and Art Bell had a knack of letting the audience know he was just toying with them when he had one on air. -- The Semi-Formal Observer, 17:02:28 02/01/03 Sat

[> Cutting off C2C at 5AM during the week (by not replaying the first hour) is also a huge mistake by WPHT. Myself, and many co-workers listened to C2C during our early morning commute. I'd always hear comments about that morning's subject matter during the day. Since the change, I haven't heard one person that's listened to the new WSJ show. I think one of the last things we needed was another market show, especially at that hour. -- The Semi-Formal Observer, 21:04:30 01/29/03 Wed

To tell you the truth, I have about had it with WPHT myself. I know it is all about money but that kind of thinking leveled Enron in the long run too.

Ceisler hasn't been on Sunday night for the last 2 weeks, the overnight is a waste, and even the subject matter on Dom's show is starting to sound watered down. Dom always wants to discuss the pressing problems of a relationship or of a sexual nature along with the serious stuff. (ex. let us juice up the show.....frozen sperm.....Jay Lo.....and all that other garbage) I thought Dom was the last refuge from this type of garbage on WPHT and frankly, his show is starting to stink.

As far as Smerconish, he has found through experience it is a lot easier to prepare for and he can get a lot more mileage out of these types of show.

I'd listen to the ROAD GANG if Dave Nemo would come back. I enjoyed listening to Chaplain Joe Hunter, the weather reports, the theme song, and Dave's mini editorials better than anything WPHT is offering at the present.

[> WPHT informercials are just awful and getting worse -- Talk Radio Bug, 13:04:45 01/30/03 Thu

The infomercials are not only boring but they are fraudulent and entice only vulnerable people. The so called all natural cures for everything are just nonsense. If they were so good then physicians would be prescribing them. WPHT management has no shame in that they present this stuff in a huge radio market where they have a nearly unique niche. The only apparent competition is WHAT 1340 and that station at 900 AM whose letters escape me at the moment. The competition is dismal but WPHT does not even clearly outclass those limited venues.

I tune in to WOR 710 and WABC 770 in New York for something that resembles intelligence on occasion. Its too bad that Philadelphia can not seem to support an intelligent talk format station.

[> wpht programming their reponse mine -- dan, 14:19:15 01/31/03 Fri

I apreciate your honest response. I know how difficult is to program and run a talk station. I will not flane you accept to note a few points.
You're own flagship station runs C2C on the weekends. It doesnt seem too disturb them.
Rush and C2c with the retired Art Bell were were the top two listened to hosts in the country.
It must be concluded that your fall in the ratings comes from your weak vapid local line up.
You miss the point talk raido is sold from the local up to national the same way with entertainment yes. However, the host must make a connection to his listener.
This is what Art did; this is what the old WWDB did. You're local host don't do that they are
like Glenn Beck self permoting and self-righteous IMHO

As of last weekend Coast to Coast will no longer be heard on Saturday and
Sunday nights. Yes, it is being replaced by infomercials. The straight
answer is that these are the least listened to times of the week and putting
infomercials there causes the least disruption to the schedule. I know this
doesn't help you since this is when you want to listen. But honestly, these
programs bring more money into the station then Coast to Coast will and this
is necessary for us to provide quality talk programming during the week.
Sorry again for disrupting the programs you want to hear and thanks for
listening to the Big Talker.
