Subject: Tragedy

Many of you already know that I currently live in Florida, but specifically I'm in Palm Bay, an hour's drive south of the Kennedy Space Center. I can step right out my back door to watch the shuttle launches, and the twin sonic booms from the shuttles' landing approaches often rock my apartment.

Today, there were no sonic booms, and the silence was defeaning...

This year our former neighbor will command the upcoming shuttle launch, we are doing a special educational unit at school on his mission. Needless to say this is like a death in the family to us. [> Sorry for your personal loss Surf. I saw the first night shuttle go off from my vantage point on the banks of the Banana River back in the 80's. It is impressive to watch but I wonder if the returns of the space program are really worth the expenditure. Also, how much grief can the media wring out of events like this, especially after 9/11?
