Subject: Missing having a local morning guy

As I was changing from Imus to KYW to Jim Gearhart, I recalled that it was listening to talk radio on my drive in to work that first hooked me on talk radio. While the Imus team is very talented, it is not the kind of talk radio that hooks new loyal listeners (IMHO). Who identifies with an (apparently) antisocial guy like Imus, for example?

At the time, Dominic Quinn was on, with call-ins by "Joe the Bartender" and other local characters. One got a sense of community by listening. It was adictive. We have had other good morning talk personalities since then like Paul W. Smith and Phil Valentine and some perhaps not as likeable (I won't name names).

Question: Could it be that the lack of a local morning talk anchor during drive time is hurting the growth of new listeners? Am I totally off-base here and just being nostalgic or losing touch with the new reality, or have I identified a critical gap in programming? I just felt like raising this question. Any opinions?

You could learn things and be entertainined......by the CALLERS as well as the host. Also, Imus does have a good mix but sometimes his non-stop hypochondria and bitching over nothing forces me to turn the dial. -- Freddy, 12:03:22 02/22/03 Sat

I agree there is a need for local drive time talk. I remember the days of Dominic Quinn. It is important to know something of how our neighbors feel and think about challenges we are all facing. It is so annoying that the two national shows on air from 9-3 are nothing more than purveyors of the government's agenda. Works if one agrees, angers if one doesn't.
This new era we have entered in which the media and their minions decry daily any dissenting opinion is, I feel, very dangerous for an America which has fought long and hard to establish the best working model of freedom in the world.
It is so important that people be exposed to all types of opinions in a free market of exchange in order that the one voice drummed loudly each day does not result in lockstep thinking. Thank you, Phelan

[> While I cannot say I pine for the days of Dominic Quinn, lack of a decent local morning show is, IMHO, greatly hurting any chance of WPHT ever climbing out of the doldrums it is in today. A solid morning show is certainly the reason WABC is doing so well in the affluent suburbs around NYC. (Note... people with money to spend if you sell them right). I doubt the corporate suits will ever understand or appreciate that. -- Sam (Bucks County), 17:16:58 02/22/03 Sat

Get ready gang. There's another tape delayed syndicated show coming to WPHT! A live local morning show is what helped WABC get some ratings again, but WPHT has not been graced with such a thoughtful PD!

[> [> I agree, Sam, re the "good ol' daze." I was just sharing my experience and how I was added to the audience. Phil Valentine did a similar thing to the ratings when he was here before Mike Thompson gave him the axe. No way to prove or disprove my conjecture, but that loss of community in the morning is a real downer for some of us. -- SurveyGuy (I wonder if Imus has grown the PHT moring audience), 22:54:34 02/25/03 Tue
