Subject: Gravyfest observations

My wife, a die-hard Sinatra fan, insisted we attend the Saturday night dinner and the Sunday event at the First Union Center. A few observations from both events: we are thirty-something, and we were among the youngest in the crowd- most people were in their 50's & 60's...hardly what you would call a young, hip audience; Pat Cooper was TERRIBLY UNFUNNY- no one was laughing, what a waste of the station's money. Equally unfunny was the station sales mgr. who was the "emcee"- no one at our table could understand why he was up there when Katz, Giordano, or Rollye could have spoke to the audience. Smerconish spoke, but he was interrupted by a heckler who was quickly ushered out of the room. Sid Mark went on about Sinatra and it felt very creepy and maudlin (I like Sinatra as a singer, but Sid he was not God, for crying out loud. Sunday at the First Union Center, it was obvious the concourse was "scaled back" to make the room look more crowded. Did not see a lot of sponsors. I give the station credit for trying this, but it was obvious they lost a lot of money. If they can correct some of this year's problems and find a way to get more than a predominantly senior citizen crowd, this could be a fun event.

If Sid stopped tomorrow and there was never another kareoke night in America and somone picked off that guy on Main street in Manyunk, would we ever hear another Sinatra song again? -- A big Frank fan (ha ha), 23:11:27 11/09/02 Sat

[> Sinatra -- Captn Hank, 15:15:20 11/10/02 Sun

That's another WPHT function you wouldn't find me attending. Just listen to a Sinatra recording and remove the orchestra..... HE CAN'T SING. There were so many better singers during that era, but they didn't have the "mob" support. The Nelson Riddle Orchestra and many more big bands made him sound good. The "sheeple" crowd will make an "idol" out of anyone. Just look at this M&M "ASS", his new movie was top grossing for the opening weekend.

[> [> Read my views on Sinatra -- bw, 12:53:55 11/12/02 Tue

Sinatra is the most overrated performer of all time. When Elvis helped usher in the rock and roll era, he made Sinatra irrelevant. Sinatra wrote, influenced and innovated nothing. There were plenty of similar crooners before him. After Elvis, only blue hairs and mobsters in Vegas were interested. The Rock and roll era makes everything before it less important. Are there any new artists performing his style of music today? NO. Elvis had excitement and charisma that Sinatra never had. There is a direct lineage from Elvis to the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Nirvana to Incubus and so on. Rock and roll will always be with us. Elvis is the inspiration for every kid in a garage with an old guitar and a beat up amp. Who did Sinatra influence? Harry Connick Jr.? Sinatra is way down the list of important musical artists of the 20th century. I know Elvis wrote very few songs and stole from black artists, he is not perfect, but he taught us how to rock. Sinatra was a nice singer but he went the way of the Dinosaurs.

I'm also LMAO, I would be the first to admit that I couldn't carry a tune in a truck. Not my claim to fame.

What's in store for you now after your exit from "THE SOPRANOS"?

[> GravyFest A Success -- Serafina, 13:45:22 11/13/02 Wed

While I can't offer a comment on Saturday evening's party at the Lowes featuring Sid Mark and Pat Cooper, I can tell you that GravyFest was a HUGE success. That is why the line went around the First Union Center. Sales Manager Mike Baldino and his staff should be complimented on an outstanding job that I hope will be bigger and better next year. As for the average age, there were parents there with their young children to grandparents with their grandchildren. What a great way to spend a Sunday with the family.

[> Alan makes an excellent point. Despite all the ominous signs, ninety percent of talk radio, out of a combination of laziness and inertia, continues to pander to the "old people in their underwear" (thank you, Jay Sorensen). That's why talk radio is dying. -- Jim Walsh, 19:55:06 11/14/02 Thu

[> You gave up your ENTIRE WEEKEND for that? You deserve an award! You're right- Sinatra's no god. Just have your wife read Kitty Kelly's "My Way" bio on Sinatra and you'll see him for the creep he really was. When you read the book, you see that the majority of Sinatra's so-called "good works" and "humanitarian efforts" were thinly-disguised attempts to buy favorable publicity. You should have brought a copy of her book and asked Sid Mark to autograph it. -- Bogey, 22:00:05 11/15/02 Fri
