Subject: A Smerconish Question for the Group

Since Michael Smerconish's producers would not allow me to ask this question, I thought I would put it out to this Board for their thoughts. In the Inquirer, columnist Michael Klein noted that Smerconish's wife was the real estate agent that handled the sale of the home that Allen Iverson recently purchased (it was listed at $5.9 million). A few weeks ago, Smerconish had Larry Platt on hawking his new book on Iverson. What a coincidence that Smerconish stuck up for Iverson, calling his brush with the law over the summer nothing more than "a family matter." It is bad enough when Smerconish throws softballs for his usual gang of cronies- what makes this "interview" so hard to swallow is that Lavinia Smerconish gets a six-figure commission, while Smerconish pretends to be totally objective. Is there anyone else out there who is disturbed by this? Maybe he should be forced to run disclaimers at the start of his program like Dr. James A. Corea had to do. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks. Thank you!

[> I knew something was up the minute I heard Platt hawking his magazine on the show. Earlier this year, when Croce was a guest every other day on S's show, it would logically follow that S would absolve AI of any responsibility for his actions. My Question: Did you notice S didn't have too much to say about the El Al hijacking on that flight to Turkey after his non-stop praise for their security? -- Freddy, 11:28:16 11/19/02 Tue

[> [> So what is your point, other than that MAS makes more money than you do and is therefore inherently evil? That little monkey on the Sprint commercial makes more than you do. You probably hate him too. -- Madison, 21:43:11 11/19/02 Tue

[> [> [> Actually, I have two points. I don't think S is totally honest with his audience and I don't believe you have extra-sensory perception in regards to my financial status. As a sidebar, I also think you should dispense with your hero worship of meal tickets. -- Freddy, 10:25:07 11/21/02 Thu

[> Smerconish is paid to have an opinion. He's not a journalist. Otherwise, the show would be as interesting as KYW School Closings. Are you in real estate, by any chance? -- Madison, 17:20:23 11/19/02 Tue

[> I would pay Smerconish not to talk about Iverson. That story while momentarily commanding was blown way out of porportion. It interested the sports fan and left most of the rest of us yawning. And he did talk about El Al, what you want? a 60 minutes piece? -- Surf, 18:39:13 11/19/02 Tue

[> You need a basic course on Business 101. Why do you expect someone to lash out at Iverson and jeopardize his wife's 5 million dollar sale? Michael is using tremendous synergy here- it helps his wife seal a deal and creates goodwill for continued coverage in Philadelphia Mag. No laws were broken, so what are you whining about? This synergy puts food on the Smerconish table. I think any woman would love to have a supportive husband like Michael. -- A Fan, 12:41:22 11/20/02 Wed
