Hendrie takes radio show to TV

By Michael Schneider

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Syndicated L.A. radio comic Phil Hendrie, who claims to have "the funniest show in the history of radio," will soon see if he can bring his magic to the small screen.

Hendrie will star in an NBC sitcom as a former city cop who moves to a gated community, where he encounters the crazy residents as its new head of security. The network has hired screenwriter Peter Tolan ("Analyze That") to create the show.

"The idea is essentially that we're creating for the TV viewing audience a slice of the new hyper America," Hendrie said. "In this post 9/11 era the world has changed. The new need is for absolute freedom and quality of life and absolute security."

Hendrie, who's known for creating and voicing wild characters on his KFI-based nighttime talker "The Phil Hendrie Show" pacted with NBC and its NBC Studios wing earlier this year to build a primetime series.

The show will focus on Hendrie's character, who has recently remarried to a woman with a sketchy past and a 14-year-old kid. Besides Hendrie's encounters with the weird local folk, the project will also revolve around his attempts at trying to forge a new family.

Characters that Hendrie has created for his radio show may wind up on TV as well, including homeowners' association president Bobbie Dooley.

"A lot of people in the business and people I work with have been raving about Phil for years," Tolan said. "He has not done TV, but he's an amazingly fast study."

Tolan, who shares writing credit on "Analyze That," co-created with Denis Leary (news) the critically acclaimed ABC comedy "The Job." His other credits include the features "Analyze This," "America's Sweethearts" and "Stealing Harvard."

[> Hendrie is a tired re-run. Isn't there anything better available for talk radio?? Let's hear it. -- mediaman, 21:59:02 11/21/02 Thu

[> I would love to be wrong, but I doubt Phil Hendrie will play well in primetime. He'll have to water down his material to the point where it's barely recognizeable as his. And of course that will be part of the show. Bob Newhart always did a telephone bit on his shows. ("Well that was my fault Mrs. Webb. You were in the left lane and signaling left, so I just assumed you were turning left.") -- Madison, 23:17:46 11/21/02 Thu

[> I can just imagine some dim bulb saying to himself: "Geez, that's what a guy gets for talkin' to himself into da phone? Geez, I could do dat." (he snorts as he shoves another handful of greasy potato chips into his mouth and clicks the channel to ogle the Victoria Secret models) -- the Formal Observer, 23:35:13 11/21/02 Thu

[> [> Phil has a gift: the ability to quickly and convincingly switch voices to sound like two different people. But although it's difficult to do and impressive in its own right, it's not particularly entertaining on its own. Sad to say, neither are Phil's bits. I give him credit for a unique concept and for having the guts to skewer a radio format that can take itself way too seriously. But he's just not funny. And yes, I get the joke. It's still not funny. -- "Vince from Villanova" (Is your fridge running? Go catch it! *click*), 01:49:32 11/23/02 Sat

[> [> [> It's not funny to hear unsuspecting callers being goofed on? But one would have to ask, are the callers actual plants and simply part of the gag? We know that there are "color callers" that are paid to be regulars on various shows. -- the Formal Observer, 14:58:33 11/24/02 Sun

[> [> [> [> Some may be plants; most are probably new listeners, since Phil frequently announces his own gimmick between bits. And I'll admit, the first time I listened, I laughed my head off. The second time, I didn't, because there wasn't anything truly new about the show: same gimmick, same sorts of callers expressing the same sorts of outrage. Only the "guest" and the topic changed. -- "Vince from Villanova" (Can I please speak with Haywood Jablome?), 08:26:00 11/25/02 Mon
