In reply to: JoltinJoe 's message, "How do you account for Frank's astonishing longevity, given the lackluster results under his watch? Frank has been a part of Fordham for nearly forty years, and he has built his fair share of goodwill. Attacking Frank, as a strategy for change, has limited upside. An overall positive message and vision is more important." on Tue April 12, 2005 19:09:03

I'd stress that students believe that it would enhance the student-life experience for the university to make a commitment to sustained success in athletics, particularly in football and basketball. That should be your goal as an organization. You should get the USG behind you. In order for the administration to believe you are serious, the students will have to pack Coffey Field and the RHG. Right now, students don't come out in enough numbers. You have to get them to the games, or the administrators will continue to believe the athletics are not important to the student body as a whole. Show both the student body and the administration that your group is willing to do its part to turn campus athletics into an event. Work with your student program boards to sponsor, for example, alumni/student cocktail parties (wrist bands for those old enough to drink) at the conclusion of each home football game. Hire a jazz band to play on Keating Steps at the conclusion of each home game, and have moderately priced cash bars (no profits) to serve alcohol. (Rain location inside, McGinley Ballroom). Stress the purpose of the event is so that students can meet alumni. It is important for the university to foster strong alumni/student contacts, which can lead to jobs and opportunities for students. This can also foster more loyal (and perhaps more generous) alumni. But make the point that while you are doing your part, nothing gets the alumni back to campus more than a winning program. Tell them if the school does its part to get the alumni there, you will entertain them. Think about family friendly events that WAC or some other group can arrange for Edward's Parade. Clowns, puppet shows, etc. Many alumni have small children, and this will appeal to them. Make game day an event for students, alumni and their children. That's what you will do. What will they do? Think about comparable events for basketball games. Right now, the alumni run to Dagger John or the Rebounders' Club reception. Work with the Rebounders' Club for post-game cocktail parties with entertainment at several homes basketball games, welcoming both students and alumni.

  • One disturbing but logical conclusion: Frank has pleased his bosses over the years. I've always believed that what you see is what was wanted. How else do you explain so many years of losing records? (NT) -- Rambow, Wed April 13, 2005 15:03:47
  • Frank doesn't make waves and goes with the flow. He also let's Jeff Gray do his Woody Hayes act without a peep. Any real AD would have been gone years ago with that dark cloud hanging over his head. We will never get a top flight AD if the position reports to Gray or any VP. The new AD must be a VP reporting to the President. (NT) -- Rambacker, Wed April 13, 2005 15:13:20
