  In conjunction with Rob Smith and a few others we have set up a new set of boards on a different system. The new boards can be found by going to www.fordhamfans.com. This new forum requires registration and login which we feel will ultimately make the boards more enjoyable for everyone.
  
  When you register you will receive an email that will contain instructions on completing your registration. If you do not follow the instructions in the email you will not be able to log in to the new forum.

• Temprorary Shutdown -- ace93, Fri April 29, 2005 10:47:05 [1]
  Due to the added time that has been required to moderate this board as of late and due to increased responsibilities in my daily life I have decided to temporarily shut this board down. The board will still be accessible, but you will notice that when you try to post it will ask you for a "Post Password". The two people that help me out on the board have been quite busy themselves and cannot provide the amount of time necessary to moderate the board either. It would be great if the board could stay up during this busy time, but clearly it has been proven that the board cannot go unmoderated.
  
  For the time being I suggest that those that wish to discuss Fordham hoops vist the A-10 Message Board by using the link provided in the header section of this board. It is a very robust message board system and in addition to the main A-10 Message Board it also has individual boards for each A-10 member institution.
  
  That said, if someone wants to start up a new board please do so. If someone does do that please use the Contact Forum Admin link provided on this board to let me know the location of the new board and I will post a message here directing others to it.

  Attention ACE'93 and other readers and moderators of this board. I'm aware criticisms of the moderators are not the fashion of this board, and more times then not, they lead to the banishment of a poster and unwarranted attacks from other posters trying to win favor (why?) with the moderators. But I don't care, cause I've had it!
  
  Ace aka Dete aka (loose translation: F*#% You) has banned people for slighting him, and he's banned people for merely saying: "ABOLISH FORDHAM FOOTBALL" (just name the Catholic University's with flourishing football programs...there's only 2, because it doesn't work, it damamges the institutions resources). But don't dare say that here!
  
  So Ace why aren't you doing anything about the posters who bash Rambacker everyday for years. That right years, every damn day on this board. And what has he done to deserve it, has he slighted you? It's apparent from his posts that he supports Fordham Football, so it can't be your dislike for AFF. What is it Ace? What's your problem? What's eating at you?
  
  Do you have something personally against Rambacker? Do you enjoy him being tormented on this board? Is that what revs your engines? Are you angry he provides information which you no longer seem capable of doing?
  
  This isn't a recent development Dete...what's going on here?
  
  Aren't you the same guy who once wrote (A Buddha-like): "Peace to you" to an angry poster? Why do you hate Rambacker?

  • It was the constant cursing that got people banned, not the message they brought even though this is not the forum for such a message. If there could be a promise made by all the AFF crew and others for that matter to not curse I would gladly un-ban everybody. Just the other day I got an email from an AFF guy and in the end it resorted to personal attacks and name calling. Why should I trust that it will be any different if they were unbanned?           • Rivals is actually not that accurate at all. The bulk of my recruiting info comes from personal contacts, some of whom are writers for these sites. Even they admit that info on recruiting is regularly exaggerated and manipulated, depending on whom one is speaking with. Coaches have a tendency to skew info also.   In a post below discussing this years commencement speaker BFG brought up a thought about how, considering the recent events in Rome it would have been interesting to have Cardinal Dulles as the speaker. I was going to reply in that thread but felt that it would have gotten lost. So I have a question for the board, what role does the Cardinal play in events like commencement and considering his age and the tremendous prestige he brings to the University how and when should he be honored at an event like Commencement? I know of no other American Catholic University with an eminent and still active faculty member with the office of Cardinal. It is a tremendous honor for Fordham but unlikely to be repeated by us or another school. I remember at the time of his election to office there were ceremonies on campus and that he has a prominent role as the holder of an endowed faculty chair. However what is the best way to salute him and does he have an ongoing role at major University events?

We want someone who can challenge and stimulate us with a speech that will give us fervor as we enter the real world. Fordham students are upset with the choice of John Sexton because a lot of students would have gone to NYU if they wanted to hear John Sexton speak. The heart of this matter is NOT spoiled kids looking for an autograph, but rather young men and women who have an identity in their school and who want the very best for their school. After a bit of research, I think John Sexton will give a lovely speech, but as my old baseball coach told me,"It's ok to be happy, but never be satisfied."     • What particularly annoys me about the Sexton flap at Fordham is that the complainers are dumping on a three-time graduate (B.A., M.A., Ph.D) OF THEIR OWN UNIVERSITY. When I had him for a freshman theology course back in '65, I found him to be a dynamic teacher, and the only graduate assistant I had who really poured himself into teaching introductory courses. He has been a scholar of religion and of the law, an entrepreneur (he founded a chain of test-preparation centers), an educator, a law school dean, and a university president.           • Great post, Ram'69. Today students want a headliner to give their commencement addresses. Contrast that with the Fordham Commencement of 1984. Twenty one years ago, the students actually suggested, as one their proposed commencement speakers, retiring university president Rev. James Finley, a proposal accepted by the school. Fr. Finley was plainly honored by the gesture, saying in his address that he considered himself "forever a member of the class of 1984." I just don't think this would happen today. Commencements are covered like never before so you can see a commencement address at Harvard or Michigan or Stanford and see the President or some other high profile public figure delivering the address.   • For purely selfish reasons I would like to see us play the Universtiy of Miami. It would be a great excuse for me to visit the family and South Florida is a great place to visit in November. I like the idea of Gonzaga, but they seem to have something going with St. Joe's so may not be interested in another A-10 team. Could not hurt to find out though.   • I am pretty familiar with the WCC since my father is a USF booster. I think it would be a natural for us to play USF, Gonzaga, and Santa Clara in home and home matchups. The Zags would be the toughest to schedule although I bet if we made the return game something at MSG, they might take the game. They like playing in "big" locations during the nonconference season. USF is a team we should have been playing home and home for last 50 years. It is a natural fit considering they are essentially the same school as Fordham in terms of big-city location, student body, etc. (although Bill Russell, K.C. In my opinion we should have USF on the schedule every year. Jesuit school, about the same size, in a big metropolis, with a storied hoops tradition. We are essentially the same team right now as them (granted they made the NIT last year). Both schools with ambitious head coaches trying to get the programs to the next level. Both schools with "small school" gym settings that can get loud. I know they have brought up at www.donscentral.com the idea of playing Fordham in the past, when they have talked of making an East Coast swing. It just seems to make a lot of sense.         • We played Stanford once during the Penders' era, 1985-86, in the finals of the Hawaii-Pacific Invitational, and won 69-66. We played Stanford three other times. First, during the 1960-61 season, under Johnny Bach, we lost at Stanford, 59-44. We lost again at Stanford under Hal Wissell during the 1972-73 season, 77-54. In 2000-01, we lost to Stanford under Bob Hill, 86-60. The time to which you refer, when the Stanford students "adopted" Jerry Hobbie, we were playing in the Stanford Invitational in December 1983. We did not play Stanford, however. We played North Carolina in the first round, and Hobbie played such a great game covering Michael Jordan that the Stanford fans started openly rooting for Hobbie, chanting his name and "transfer, transfer." As Rambacker notes, the whole incident was written up in Sports Illustrated, with Penders calling Hobbie "The Cabbage Patch Kid" for the way he won over the crowd.   • Linda Bruno started out like a house afire! First she secured Fordham, Richmond, Xavier, and Dayton into the A-10 to replace Rutgers and WVU. The A-10 then had UMass make the Final 4 and had 4-5 NCAA bids a year. But since the advent of A-10 Football the basketball scene has declined. Last season only one A-10 team was selected and was a 12 seed. Sadly the A-10 basketball program is at rock bottom with the Patriot League and the SWAC. • This year's graduation speaker will be John Sexton, President of NYU. I don't know if anyone else will agree with me, but I think Mr. Sexton is a poor choice. I know his accomplishments are impressive and he is a formidable figure in higher education (as well as an alum), but he is the steward of a rival institution's clout and prominence. So why are we inviting in to speak? Could we not get anyone else? It just seems to me that in inviting Mr. Sexton, we are tacitly recognizing NYU's superiority over us.   It wasn't pretty, but we held on to beat Iona. The Fordham site has a good rundown of the game. We played pretty good defense and hit the ball well, but the game was much closer than the score. Iona left 12 men on base. Three times Iona had the bases loaded with two outs and each time our pitchers ended the threat with a strikeout. Pretty exciting, and there was a respectable crowd for a Tuesday afternoon. Goooooo Rams.....beat Fairfield!

  I spoken w/ several fans about the starting times of our basketball games. While there has been discussion on the board in the past re: weekend games, we've not spent much time discussing weeknight games.
  
  For many fans coming from Manhattan, 7 PM is too early b/c they have to get to Grand Cental in time for a 6:03 train. For fans working downtown, they need to leave the office by 5:30 and it's too much of a burden for fans to get out of the office by that time. Even fans like me who work in midtown have to leave the office by 5:40. By moving the start times to 7:30, fans could catch a 6:45 train and would not have to leave the office until after 6. That's a big difference for many fans.
  
  I've also heard from fans who live in Westchester and NJ and say that a 7 PM start makes it difficult for them to leave work at a reasonable time and make the games.
  
  I'd be interested to hear what other posters, both students and alums, think about the idea. As we try and draw more fans and make it easier for our fans to attend, I think moving the starting time back to 7 PM is good idea. BTW, it's not a league or TV issue since some A-10 schools start @ 7:30 and very few of our home games are on TV.

  • A 7:00 PM start on a wednesday night leaves out a lot of our student fan base. Wednesday night is the time when a lot of students have their night calsses, which for FCRH begin at 6:00 and end at 8:20 and for CBA begin at 6:30 and end at 9:15. Considering this, by pushing back the start time by an extra half hour to 7:30, these students will atleast be able to catch a good portion of the second half. It seems to me, as a student leader of the Sixth Man Club, that the students and Alumni are in agreement in pushing back the start time. This would absolutely boost the attendance of the students through the matter of convenence. I also have no problem with starting the game at 8:00 as well, I don't know if it is too late for others who would be travelling to the game, but it seems like it would provide the opportunity to grab a bite to eat out on Arthur Ave. as opposed to grabbing a Sodexho Dog or waiting an hour at Dagger's.   1. Allow 1 win by a 1A team vs a 1AA team to count toward their minimum 6 wins to qualify for a bowl game.
  
  2. Allow 1 game by a 1A team at home vs. a 1AA team to count towards the 1A team's minimum of 5 home games.
  
  3. Get rid of 1A and 1AA designations. Instead, teams would declare if they were going to try and qualify for a bowl game or the 16 team playoff that decides the 1AA champ.
  
  Interesting point made about the A and AA designations. The commissioner of the Big Sky said that other schools that have 1A football, when recruiting for basketball against Big Sky programs, refer to ALL the Big Sky sports as 1AA.

  There has been plenty of talk about NBA commissioner David Stern's pushing hard for an age limit that would require players to be at least 20 years old to be drafted, and he has been getting plenty of opposition from the NBA players union. But the word is they're starting to listen.
  
  Even in high school, LeBron James drew comparisons to MJ and Magic. Hoops at the highest level is hurting with so many young, unprepared kids coming into the league. And college basketball is being hurt by talented players' not coming to campus. The passion and love that kids play with in college is a special thing, because the school's name on the front of the jersey means more than the player's name on the back.
  
  There has to be some kind of plan to get talented high schoolers into college programs, but there is a problem with the flat 20-year age limit: How do you deny a phenom, someone like LeBron James, the opportunity to make a living? Think about the numbers LeBron posted last year as a rookie, when he won the Rookie of the Year award as a 19-year-old (when he started the season, he was 18). He had a super season in his second year, too, which would have been his sophomore year in college.
  
  I challenge you to name a 20-year-old who has ever been better. LeBron is definitely the best I've ever seen at his age. Would you deny someone like Tiger Woods, Alex Rodriguez or Venus and Serena Williams the chance to turn pro and earn a living before turning 20? No, because we live in America, and the right to do what you desire is one of the great gifts we have in this country. It's all about freedom, man!
  
  With that said, let me present my three-phase Vitale Bald Dome Index plan that would solve the problem and bring some consistency to both college and the pros:
  
  Phase One of my VBDI plan: Appoint a blue-ribbon panel – featuring NBA general managers like Jerry West, Rod Thorn, Larry Bird, Mitch Kupchak and Ernie Grunfeld – to evaluate the high-school talent. This panel would narrow the group of high-school stars entering the draft to the three, four or even five players who would be sure-fire lottery picks.
  If guys like Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant and Amare Stoudemire are out there, don't deny them the chance to play in the NBA.
  
  In Phase Two, the players identified by the panel would have the right to choose to either enter the draft or go to college. If the panel classifies them as talented enough, let them go pro. Once they stepped onto college campuses as freshmen, they would be required to stay for three full years, as is the case in college baseball.
  All the other high schoolers – all those who are not identified by the blue-ribbon panel – would enter Phase Three of my plan: Once they stepped onto college campuses as freshmen, they would be required to stay for three full years, as is the case in college baseball. After that third year, they would again be eligible for the NBA draft. That three-year requirement would also apply to all Phase Two high schoolers who choose college over the NBA.
  
  In baseball, there is great unison between MLB, the players union and the NCAA. That's what makes it work, and it could work for basketball too. This would be a perfect remedy, my friends, for the dilemma facing the game we all love. It would let the very best of the best have their chance in the NBA, and it would send plenty of great players to college. At the same time, it would reduce the number of basketball vagabonds who declare for the NBA draft only to go undrafted and then wander from one lesser pro league to another.
  
  There is no doubt that David Stern has a terrific love for basketball and has done a perfect job of selling and marketing the pro game, even overseas. But there are plenty of people, including yours truly, who love the college game just as much. My plan would go a long way toward improving the efficiency and level of play, in both college and the NBA, for the game that means so much to all of us.

  • I don't think a 20 year rule would necessarily bring Fordham better players. The teams that would get better players would be the teams in the immediate rung below the big boys. What is great now is that there is some parity. The little guys can match up with the big guys at some posistions and if they're on, can pull an upset.   • As a present Fordham Senior, it is important for me to comment on this selection. As a college student in New York, I view NYU as our competition in terms of prestige and enrollment. I would prefer we not have a competing school's president as our keynote speaker. To me, it feels like we are bowing to NYU as a superior school. Our class has given at 36% with $3,000 dollars more than last years class. Our class is the class that while making an adjustment to living at college was subject to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. It would have been a lot nicer if Fordham realized the generosity, sacrifice and historical importance of this class by rewarding them with someone of more notoriety as a keynote speaker.             • Don't you think the students should have the forum to suggest or approve of their very own keynote speaker? Another view I have heard from a few students here, that I do not necessarilly agree with, is that after four years of college and the countless hours of work and class, why are we getting a speech from another academic. The other day on campus (a month or two ago), I was able to walk over and listen to a speech given by Bishop Desmond Tutu. I have had a lecture given by Dr. George F. Bass, who pioneered the field of underwater archaeology and discovered the million-piece glass puzzle. Considering how lucky I was to have these opporunities, I expected the world for Commencement.   • I understand the disappointment of some Seniors at the lack of name recognition of John Sexton as Commencement speaker. However though he might not have the high public profile of an entertainment figure like Bill Cosby he is no less accomplished, having risen to a place of prominence in the academic world. I can see why honoring the President of NYU, a rival of Fordham could upset some Seniors but let’s not forget that his three degrees from Fordham show what an alumnus can achieve and without that connection I doubt we’d even consider having him speak.   Was in attendance at yesterday's come from behind sweep of Temple. Greatest pair of wins that I have seen on the diamond in a long time! FU rallies for 3 runs(started with bases empty and 2 outs) in extra innings to maintain their undefeated conference record (31-13, 12-0 a10).
  3rd straight season Fordham has won 30+ games. I understand that is only softball and a non-revenue sport, however this team should be recognized for what they are doing. 12-0 wow! Undoubtably, Softball is the currently the #1 athletic program at the University, and only seems to be getting better. Go Rams. Keep it going!

  A coaching swap might soon be finalized between DePaul and the state of Virginia.
  
  One week after Dave Leitao left the Blue Demons for the University of Virginia’s head-coaching job, DePaul is seriously considering third-year University of Richmond coach Jerry Wainwright as a replacement.
  
  The Richmond Times-Dispatch cited sources in a report Saturday stating that Wainwright, a Berwyn native, will interview Monday with DePaul officials. Wainwright and his wife, Debbie, are expected to fly today to Chicago. He spent Saturday in Richmond and was a guest speaker at a golf function.
  
  Sources close to the DePaul search said Wainwright is the No. 1 choice of athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto. Wainwright, 58, could be introduced as DePaul’s head coach later this week.
  
  DePaul spokesman Scott Reed said Saturday that interviews will begin sometime this weekend. Lenti Ponsetto expects no more than four candidates to meet with the school’s interview committee.

  This past weekend, Fordham's Coed Sailing team won the Greater New York Area Dinghy Championship and the Lady Rams placed 11th among the top 14 schools in our conference, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, MAISA. We hosted the former event at Morris Yacht & Beach Club on City Island. At 9:30 AM Saturday, competition was postponed until Sunday as the wind was blowing 15 - 18 knots with gusts 20+, whitecaps filled Eastchester Bay, and the forecast was for 25 - 30 knots in the afternoon with gusts to 40 and potential thunderstorms. On Sunday, we had a steady 12 - 18 knot wind all day and got in 24 races. Nate Powell '06 & Katie Griffin '08 sailed A Division and placed second behind Kings Point. Alex Baum '08 & Cristina Puglia '07 raced B Division and was the low-point crew for the regatta. Results:

  3. NY Maritime - 72

  5. Webb Institute - 114
  6. Army - 130
  7. Monmouth - 163

  The MAISA Women's Championship was hosted by Georgetown. Fordham was represented by Anne-Marie Martin '08 & Katie O'Malley '07 in A Division and Jennifer Brandes '08 & Jacky Monterosso '07 in B Division. In 22 races, our gals broke into the top 10 eleven times and scored as high as 5th in one race and 8th in two others so the potential for future improvement definitely exists. The top four teams qualified for the ICSA Women's National Championship. Results: 1. St. Mary's - 60; 2. Navy - 72; 3. Georgetown - 75; 4. Old Dominion - 85; 5. Hobart/William Smith - 121; 6. Washington C. - 157; 8. Loyola - 173; 9. Columbia - 181; 10. Kings Point - 197; 11. Fordham - 233; 12. Christopher Newport - 255; 13. Maryland - 259 & 14. Drexel - 263.
