  6' 6" Geoff McDermott, from New Rochelle HS in New York, shunned a full scholarship offer from Duke today with a verbal to Providence. Fordham recruited McDermott over the '04 Summer and for the 1st half of his '04-'05 season.

  • A perfect example of how kids pick a school b/c of playing time. I venture to guess that McDermott see his chances for immediate playing time at Providence, whereas the same did not apply for Duke. That is why I never buy into the notion that a kid will not pick us over a team from a major conference b/c it will happen. Maybe not right now, but someday.       • There's a lot to be said for being first and hanging in the longest when recruiting. PC did an excellent job here, and McDermott, in my estimation, will have an immediate impact on their program. Re: ace93's point, I agree that we will sign a player(or 2 or 3) who's being recruited by higher ranked programs because DW has proven in the past that he will outwork other coaches to land a good player(as was the case when he signed Stephon Marbury at Georgia Tech).   Frank is clearly not the guy to handle any of this, since I don't believe one dreams when comatose. But if the school doesn't go all out to address ALL of its needs, then Fr. McShane's "small dreams" statement is a slogan, nothing more. What will it be, gentlemen, slogans or substance?

  • I am a huge proponent of a new facility for Fordham Athletics. However, the sad fact is that we have yet to consistently fill up the RHG in the past few years. I think the RHG will eventually be replaced, but at present time there is no oppressive need to replace it. Also, it does provide a great home court advantage. In terms of mentioning Frank, I just wasnt sure how to include him in the discussion without attacking him.   • I appreciate the effort, BronxRam, but I think you're missing the big picture here. Frank is not the biggest problem with the Athletic Dept. I'm not arguing that he should stay, but the main problem with athletics is the reporting structure. We need an AD with clout, one who doesn't have to go to an academic dean for approval. Think about it, what prospective AD in his right mind would accept a job in which he had to report to the Dean of Student Affairs? That's ridiculous and that's what has to change. I guess it depends on how long it takes him to rehab. If he is ready for next season then it may actually wind up being good for St. Joes as they will now have Jones back.   • I don't know all the particulars here, but it's one thing if you lose a kid to the Big East or to the ACC. If someone wants to play in one of those leagues we don't have much of a chance w/ him anyway. But to lose a kid to UMass, in the same league, a team who is ahead of us, yes, but Lowe turned down the chance to stay home, it screams FACILITIES. I doubt it will ever get fixed, but I gotta believe, since Lowe went to UMass in the A-10, we would have had a big shot with legitimate facilities. (NT) -- SlamJamRam, Wed April 13, 2005 10:13:05
    • Not knowing the particulars is huge here. Rumors have it that he is not yet qualified, I seriously doubt we will be taking many (if any) partial qualifiers going forward. The school felt they gave the previous coach some leeway here and since the results were not good, they have gotten more stringent again. Another thing to consider is that it was reported that DW and staff had stopped recruiting Lowe b/c they did not feel he was the answer we needed at PG (or perhaps it was b/c they knew he would struggle to get accepted to FU).       • He'll be good for UMass. I don't know that he'll ever be a star in the Atlantic 10, but he should be a solid four-year guy and a contributor. In terms of what was out there at this point, UMass did well. Apparently Lowe was swayed by the fact that he would likely have a shot at a starting job, and the abundant playing time available. That's the breaks, sometimes. The qualifying issue is huge, however. I wonder if UMass is gambling by signing him to the letter of intent if there is a chance he may not qualify.. He is not qualified but his HS coach is saying that "he will be qualified"(take that for what it's worth - high school coaches protect their players) This "unknown" was a big factor for us. 2. We finished 3rd behind UMass and UTEP. Lowe wants to go away and Fordham was too close. It's hard to fight this as a recruiter. 4. UMass was willing to sign Lowe without knowing if he was a qualifier - another big factor. 5. I'm told that Lowe walked into the Mullins Center and it was all over.     • I'm not sure what you mean by "exceptional", but I do know Fordham is becoming a "hot" school for a variety of particular reasons, including our academic standing, location, library, Jesuit affiliation, better marketing, and word-of-mouth. No doubt we are also "rising with the tide" (driven by technology and common forms which makes it easy to spam many schools) that is helping all schools to increase their applicant pools and drive down acceptance rates.   At the University of Maryland Spring Open sailed on the Severn River in Annapolis, Fordham finished 8th among 16 schools. This was a good showing for us as we deliberately sent a young team to compete and gain experience. Freshman Alex Baum with soph crew Cristina Puglia finished 5th in A division. In B division, we finished 8th with frosh Katie Griffin crewing all races as soph Graham Farrell shared skippering responsibility with another freshman, Patrick James. Results:

• Recruiting Update -- Rambacker, Wed April 13, 2005 15:06:06 [7]
  On Point Guards: Look for us to be in the hunt for Rutgers transfer Manny Quezada. Also, as per my prior post on him, we're still involved with 5' 11", 180 lb. PG Brian Johnson from Mt. St. Joseph's in Baltimore. He's Class of '05 and has yet to qualify, but we may offer if he does. He's an excellent passer and defender who needs to improve his shot(sound vaguely familiar?) A true point and a nice player. He's also being recruited by Providence and Kent State(is it just me or is always these two schools recruiting against us late in the game?). Stay tuned.
  
  Here's a review of a few interesting Class of '06 frontcourt recruits mentioned in my prior posts(we are involved with many, many players but I pulled these guys out because several are players we would love to sign):
  
  Delroy James, a 6' 7", 210 lb. post who is originally from Brooklyn. This kid has a big upside and is expected to grow to 6' 9" or taller, based on the height of his two brothers. Brother Shawn is a star frosh at Northeastern and his other brother Lex is a juco player in San Francisco who is being highly recruited. Word has it that St. John's leads with him and his brother Lex, and they may sign together. If we got him it would be a steal. We have already offered him. The connection to him was through his AAU coach, Tiny Morton from Lincoln HS(Dominick Osei's alma mater).
  
  Michael Glover, brother of former St. John's player Anthony, is a 6' 7", 190 lb. forward at Monroe Campus High School in the Bronx. He's a solid player that knows how to play the game and plays with great desire. He's supposed to be a great kid and would fit in well at Fordham. We need to sign him early if he'll come - right now it's us, St. Joe's, St. John's and some MAAC schools but many others will be jumping on this guy's bandwagon.
  
  Diedrick King is a 6' 3", 180 lb. swing player from New Britain HS in CT. who plays for the Connecticut Select AAU team. This is another kid that will attract a lot of schools over the summer - he's pretty athletic and is a very tough competitor. We're the highest level program recruiting him right now. A sleeper.
  
  Austin Wallace is a 6' 7", 210 lb. forward from LaSalle. A great defender who will play the 4 and 5 in college. He transferred in to LaSalle from South Bronx High School. Right now it's us, Rutgers, St. John's and a bunch of MAAC schools. Look for him to be a potential priority in the Fall signing period.

    • That's Nick Vita and the answer is yes. He's a 6' PG that is a very good all-around player. He's being looked at by Fordham, Rutgers and St. Joe's along with a lot of MAAC schools and others. In the case of Manny Quezada, I'd take him in a heartbeat because he is a player who would help us in several ways, is a great student and would fit in very well with our current players. Generally, I trhink we'll be focusing on high school prospects but our program was so decimated by the prior staff that we must look at all options to rebuild right now.   Demetrius is in the process of extending his game. At 6-9, and 212lb, he sees himself currently as a player who is in the process of migrating his game from, “…the low block extended” to more of a perimeter orientation. Expect him to work on his, “…strength and ball handling” to make this a reality. Coach Lewis agreed in that currently, “He is a strong post defender and rebounder, who loves to go the rim”. Cecil Kirk’s coach feels that Phillips may be an Atlantic 10 Conference difference maker.
  
  This native of Greenville, NC ventured north about 2 and a half years ago, and enrolled in Baltimore’s Northwestern High School. Being the nephew of former Morgan State University assistant coach Ray Daniels (a man tied into the basketball community in B’more), Demetrius was immediately introduced to the Cecil Kirk program.
  
  Before averaging an estimated 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks a contest this season for Notre Dame Prep and Coach Bill Barton, Phillips inked with Fordham University in October. His decision to attend that institution centered around its coach, a well-known Maryland native: “It’s an up and coming program coached by Derek Whittenburg. He has championship experience with NC State, and took Wagner to the NCAA tournament…I felt I could help the program to where he wants it to be”.

  Copied the following from the A-10 Board. To me the administration is dead wrong and the F should stand. This is not the same as dropping out of a course because of inability to grasp the content or disinterest. I would think that given it's sordid past, SBU would take a sterner approach to dishonesty. Then again, virtually the entire senior admin. group was dishonest.
  
  Sequence of Events
  
  
  
  These events are unfolding in the current, spring 2005 semester.
  
  
  A student/athlete was accused of and admitted to plagiarism.
  
  
  The instructor informed the student that he had failed, consistent with the course syllabus which announced that academic dishonesty would result in a failing grade. This is consistent with the relevant section of the University's Academic Integrity Policy.
  
  
  The student signed a statement acknowledging the plagiarism and accepting the failing grade.
  
  
  The faculty member informed the registrar that the student had failed the course. Final grades are posted at the end of the semester in May.
  
  
  The student was then advised by a third party that the University Catalogue stipulates that a student may withdraw from a course any time before April 1, 2005 – no questions asked. The student decided to rescind the signed statement and withdraw from the course.
  
  
  Withdrawal from a course requires two signatures of acknowledgement – not permission: one from the faculty member and one from the student's academic advisor. The faculty member refused to sign.
  
  
  The student appealed to the appropriate dean, as provided for in the Academic Integrity Policy. The dean upheld the faculty member's decision and refused to endorse the withdrawal.
  
  
  The student decided to appeal the dean's decision to the Academic Honesty Board as provided for in the Academic Integrity Policy. Since such a Board was never formally appointed by the Faculty Senate as authorized in a 1988 Senate resolution, Dr. Skip Saal, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, asked the chair of the Faculty Senate's Academic Standards Committee to select, on a case-by-case basis, three faculty members and two students from the Committee to serve as an acting Academic Honesty Board. (This is a practice Dr. Saal has followed throughout his tenure in the absence of a permanent Board. This practice had the support and endorsement of the chair of the Faculty Senate and the entire Academic Standards Committee.)
  
  
  Dr. Saal charged the acting Academic Honesty Board to decide on the specific student's case via a process described in the Academic Integrity Policy that involves calling witnesses, including the faculty member and the student. Instead, the acting Academic Honesty Board interpreted its charge to reconcile the two conflicting policies without regard to any specific student. The Board decided that the policy allowing for the student's withdrawal took precedence over the faculty member's option to assign a grade prior to the withdrawal date.
  
  
  Because of the misunderstanding of the charge to the Board, Dr. Saal convened a meeting involving the faculty member, three deans, the chair of the Faculty Senate, two members of the Board (including the chair), and representatives from the athletics department to discuss the situation. Other individuals also attended at the invitation of the faculty member.
  
  
  Following the discussion, Dr. Saal decided to nullify the decision of the acting Academic Honesty Board, based on the fact that the Board had not addressed the individual student's case as called for by the Academic Integrity Policy. Further, Dr. Saal asked the chair of the Faculty Senate to appoint a permanent Academic Honesty Board as called for in the 1988 resolution and direct the new Board to hear and decide this and other pending academic dishonesty cases by the end of the current semester.

  Fordham's Women's Sailing Team participated in a seven team regatta hosted by Washington College in Chesterton, MD on Saturday. The team was led by two frosh skippers, Anne-Marie Martin with junior Eileen O'Neill as crew and Jennifer Brandes with soph Katie O'Malley as crew. Results:
  1. Washington College - 24 points; 2. Navy - 33; 3. Georgetown - 40; 4. Hampton - 58; 5. Fordham - 66; 6. UMBC - 84 & 7. William & Mary - 90. Since our results in the 14 race series ranged from 2nd to 7th place, consistency is the team's goal at future women's events.

  • I think Hall will be back and most likely Pops as well. Pops will only go if he has a monster showing in Chicago. As far as the coach leaving.. I am never one that believes that the departure of one assistant will lead to the demise of the overall team. Ricky Lucas leaving may be a blessing in disguise for GW.   • I went to the baseball game yesterday at that glorified high school in Queens. It was a gorgeous day and some good, exciting baseball was played. When I got there the Rams were already down 4-0, but they battled back to tie it at 4. After going down 5-4 they tied up again and the game then went to extra innings. Xavier took the lead in the 10th on a walk, a sacrifice and an error. Unfortunately the Rams were unable to muster another comeback and fell by a score of 6-5. This team looks very scrappy and I do not know how they will fair as the season goes on, but they are fun to watch. By the way, St. John's has done a good job with their facilities.   I still cant believe - overall - how good these freshman were.
  
  Binns generally didnt play well but the flashes of what he could do were there. Tough kid, good athleticism and some good skills but very raw. Especially in how he plays the game. Too many long J's hoisted and too often just out of sync. Experiance usually fine tunes a kid like this. But not always...
  
  Greene is a lot like Binns with clearly has more talent and also more to learn with regards to basketball IQ. His skills are oozing all conference potential but for whatever reason he seems to really struggle to play well. Even for a freshman. Whittenberg rides him very hard so it will be interesting to see what emerges here. An upper echelon performer or a wasted talent like Liberto. I'll bet on the former. This kid is tough as nails.
  
  Kevin Anderson is one very cool customer. Certainly plays like a coach's son with a rep for toughness and who happens to be a great student too. One heady kid. Hope its 500 jumpers day this summer. If he takes the outside shot next year and hits enough to keep defenses honest? Well we will have a point guard I would go to war with against the best in our league any day of the week.
  
  Stout - Some better decisions with the ball. Improve the ballhandling. Learn a go to move. Kinda nit-picking here.
  
  Dunston - nothing needs to be said. Lifts some weights?
  
  
  If the freshman this year are anywhere close we will have a great team capable of wining the A10.

  DW: "It's not a big goal at all. Everyone kind of assumes that because of my popularity with what I did there, that I want to go there as soon as I can - but that is not a goal of mine. I didn't know I would end up at Wagner, or Georgia Tech, or Fordham. My ultimate goal is to have a program that wins a national championship.   • There's a quirk in our OOC schedule where in one year we tend to play many of our OOC games at home and the next year, due to home-and-home deals, we play more on the road. For example, we played MC, HC, Fairfield, and Siena @ home this year, so if we play those teams (MC and HC are almost definites) we'll do so on the road. Also, our early tournament will include about 4 games (anyone know more about the format) and although technically on a "neutral" court, Coach might be viewing those as road games.   I believe that I may have mentioned this before on this board but I still think that a "Fordham Ram" exhibit in the Children's Zoo of the Bronx Zoo would be a draw for the Zoo and gain both institutions some good publicity. Consider:
  1. Some group, perhaps the posters on this board, donate or contribute to the purchase of a healthy, young Ram and the creation of an appropriate exhibit in the Children's Zoo. I can see the sign over the pen, HOME OF THE FORDHAM RAM.
  2. The Ram is made available to Fordham football and day basketball games. I doubt if the logistics would enable it to be available in the evening but who knows?
  3. The Sixth Man Club or some other group becomes the "Keepers of the Ram," when it is on TDY from the Zoo. 4. It becomes an honor to be one of the 6-10 "Keepers," and students vie for the honor, perhaps academically or via recognition for social consciousness contributions.
  
  Results: The tradition of a live Ram returns to Fordham; the animal is cared for properly by professionals at the Zoo; from a publicity and public relations standpoint, both the Zoo and the University benefit via attendance at a unique, collaborative exhibit with an important and prominent neighboring institution.

I vaguely recall reading an article some time ago that Zoos are very strict about the handling of animals and making sure they are free of disease since outbreaks can spread rapidly amongst stressed animals in confined areas. I don't believe there are any restrictions on number of scholarship players for any class. For example, Fordham will have 6 sophmore scholarship players next year. Since he was eligible at the beginning of the second semester, it would seem that he would have played at least some for Wagner in the year after DW left. So at best he would have 2 1/2 years of eligibility upon entering Fordham. Since he just used up one of those, he should have three semesters of eligibility left. I don't know how the NCAA does these things, and perhaps if Corey is on track to graduate in June of 2006, you could see him as a Graduate Assistant after that, given his leadership qualities he might be pointing to a coaching career. He played his freshman year at Wagner (that is one year), half a season at Wagner his sophomore year (two years) and half a season for us last year (three years). NCAA rules state that as long as you participate during a season and are not redshirted that the participation counts as a full season of participation. That is why I have never fully understood midyear transfers. I think that our team showed a lot of heart and a few of the guys showed that they were winners (Stout's three against URI). I don't think a lack of seniors will hurt or alternatively help us between this year and next year. Also consider the amount of playing time our freshmen got this year. Personally, I think he's more of an Ivy League talent than A-10. The last word I had on Tyler Relph was that he had better hit the books to be eligible next year. That would be all the Bonnies need.   Interesting comments on baseball. I think many people feel that Gallagher manipulated the situation and Frank ( which is not hard ) .
  
  Gallagher goes on medical leave, everybody and their brother ( except Frank ) realized he was done but he waited until after recruiting season and right before practice to retire, virtually assuring that his guy, Restaino, got the job.
  
  I don't care if this guy goes .500. His track record as a recruiter is not good and he got the job under suspect circumstances. Dirty pool.
  
  I say boot him, boot the AD and start fresh across the board. This was a dirty situation and as usual, Frank was clueless.

  Anyone know of any Fordham interest in Manny Quezada? He was a high scoring combo guard (excellent shooter) coming out of St. Albans in DC and is a Washington Heights native. He didn't get much playing time his freshman year and has now stated he will transfer from Rutgers.
  
  Looks like a good student as well as Stanford and Vanderbilt were reportedly looking at him at one time. Sounds like it might be a good fit to me.
