- "Everyone here appreciates Dereck," McLaughlin said. "The people at Fordham are extremely pleased. I think the University's made it clear to Dereck that they appreciate the direction the program is going in. They've always been supportive and they'll continue to be supportive." The coach and the university are currently negotiating the terms of an extension. [beyond 2007-08, the last season of his current 5 year deal.] Article goes on " [M]eanwhile a buzz surrounds the program for the first time in recent memory. Some fans have alreday ordered their season tickets for 2005-06 . . ." (NT) -- whm, Sat March 26, 2005 10:48:18
- Air, I can't remember the last time you posted something that was not sarcastic or negative. What's up? (NT) -- frank, Sat March 26, 2005 11:13:57
- Sarcastic, me? No way! (NT) -- Air Hej '02, Sat March 26, 2005 11:28:50
- Those people that have ordered are probably Frank's pals that sit in the righful seat owners seats. Frank should be reading the records of his women's coach who has lost 100 games in 5 years and he should have fired him already. Frank is alseep at the wheel as usual. (NT) -- Ant Hill, Sat March 26, 2005 12:01:34
- Frank actually appears to be awake and negotiating a contract extension. I'd rather have him worry about trying to lock up DW than deal with Lewis. (NT) -- Air Hej '02, Sat March 26, 2005 12:03:04
- Hej, just remember, Frank's first choice for the job was Dennis Wolfe. He had two or three other candidates before certain influential alums steered him in DW's direction. That is not an exaggeration either. Frank has no clue Being AD means you must be on top of ALL sports. . (NT) -- Ant Hill, Sat March 26, 2005 12:06:14
- Very good point Ant. Maybe I am giving Frank a little too much credit here. (NT) -- Air Hej '02, Sat March 26, 2005 12:13:25
- Hmmm, let's see. It's almost April 1st and we are "currently negotiating a contract extension". What took so long? DW and staff have been recruiting like madmen since the day the season ended and - well, here's a realistic scenario for a conversation between DW and recruit Craig Austrie: Austrie - " 'Coach, how long are you under contract to Fordham?' DW - 'Well, until the '06-'07 season'. Austrie - 'That's two years from now. How do I know you'll be there for four years if I sign'? DW - 'Well, Craig, I'm negotiating with Fordham right now for a contract extension'. Austrie - 'But, coach, every other coach I've met with has a signed contract through the time I would play at their schools'. DW - 'Well, Craig, I guess you'll just have to trust me'. Craig - 'But Coach, I just met you'. DW - 'Hominahominahomina'." zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....................Get the picture? (NT) -- Rambacker, Sat March 26, 2005 12:50:44
- The contract extension is being worked out by the lawyers for the two parties, not the AD. (NT) -- Rambacker, Sat March 26, 2005 14:06:23
- We have to remember that Jeff Gray is heavily involved in all things. He is responsible for everything, good or bad, that goes on in the Athletic Department. (NT) -- JóDete93, Sat March 26, 2005 15:24:16
- Was he invisible at the basketball games this year or did he move his seats? I did not see him once. (NT) -- Ant Hill, Sat March 26, 2005 15:55:04
- He lurks up in the far corner of the top level trying to be invisible. Has anybody ever talked to him? He has to be one of the most obnoxious people I've ever met. I have not met one alum that likes him or thinks he should exert any power over athletics. He is a bigger problem than Frank M. , amazingly. I know that's hard to believe, but it's true. As someone here said, until he is removed from the equation and we have a real AD/VP with power, we will flounder. (NT) -- FC, Sat March 26, 2005 16:28:08
- I am happy others are beginning to see this reality. Shame Fr. McShane doesn't it. I am afraid Gray has grown even more powerful under him. (NT) -- Hopeful, Sat March 26, 2005 16:35:25
- I've never met the man, but I hear from multiple sources (alums, faculty, one undergrad) that Gray is a total a**hole....a wannabe jock who likes to stride around like he's Vince Lombardi. He apparently has an authoritarian personality, and gets his jollies by pushing people (esp. students) around. He's in the tradition of Father Farricker (I trust that some of you older alums remember him), who used to put on sneakers, and hide in the bushes with a flashlight trying to catch guys coming back from the bars to Martyrs' Court. (NT) -- BLT, Sat March 26, 2005 21:33:09
- Dete, can I take you're not an active member of the Jeff Gray fan club? (NT) -- Smoochy, Sat March 26, 2005 19:12:42
- Air should they put something in the contract re required refresher courses for DW and his x's and o's? (NT) -- joe b, Sat March 26, 2005 23:44:19

Just got back from the Fordham-Winthrop baseball game in Rock Hill, SC. The score was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the tenth when I left. The Rams looked good against a strong Winthrop team ranked in the top 25 a few weeks ago. Fordham has a very young team with fifteen freshmen and sophmores. Winthrop scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Fordham had used six pitchers going into the tenth inning with a sophmore, Javier Martinez, looking real good pitching the eighth and ninth innings.

Here is St. Joe's OOC schedule for next season as of today. A nice mix with Nova, Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Ohio State, Penn and Kansas at Madison Square Garden. Hope we get a game or two at the Garden - it would be odd to see the Hawks play there and not Fordham. I'd love to play Gonzaga home and home - we should work on that one. They'd probably agree to play us in the RHG. A great game for us.

- according to the A-10 board, you left out Bucknell, Davidson, and Lafayette. Also one more game w/ either Marquette, Alabama, or Creighton. (NT) -- bfg, Wed March 23, 2005 10:08:27
- That schedule once again will most likely put them high in the SOS category, but also may put them up there in the L category. I see this as a classic example of overscheduling and with the graduation of Carroll it will be interesting to see how the Hawks handle it. (NT) -- JóDete93, Wed March 23, 2005 10:31:42
- Agreed but SJU's OOC record would have been better this year had Carroll not been hurt early in the year. Just as we'll be looking for improvement from our young players, it will be interesting to see how guys like Ferguson, Calathes, and Jalloh improve. If they're healthy, Martelli will have them in most of those games. (NT) -- bfg, Wed March 23, 2005 10:41:29
- That is not the point. The point is that all it takes is one injury and your OOC is shot and then the conference's RPI suffers. That schedule lacks the two or three much needed gimmes. (NT) -- JóDete93, Wed March 23, 2005 10:47:01
- Keep in mind this is an incomplete schedule. Those two gimmes will probably be added. (NT) -- Rambacker, Wed March 23, 2005 11:04:09
- that's 11 OOC games. I think they could only add one more. (NT) -- bfg, Wed March 23, 2005 11:16:17
- With 16 league games, that would make 27. Aren't college teams allowed to schedule 28 regular season games? More? (NT) -- Rambacker, Wed March 23, 2005 11:29:59
- I think 28 is the limit, so they would only get to add 1 more game. However, they only played 27 this year (like us) so they might not add another game. (NT) -- bfg, Wed March 23, 2005 11:33:01
- If that is the case, then this would appear to be too tough a schedule for them, based on who they have coming back/in. What I like about the schedule is the creative thinking with Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Kansas at MSG, possibly Marquette or Creighton. Nice job on selecting the opponents. We should consider a similar strategy as we move forward. (NT) -- Rambacker, Wed March 23, 2005 12:52:08
- 28 is the limit, but the 28th game is allotted for the conference tournament. So when you boil it down for A-10 teams, you have 16 conference games, 11 OOC games, and 1 game allotted for the A-10 tournament. (NT) -- DonHo, Wed March 23, 2005 15:05:12
- From the games that I saw, St. Joe's was at their best when Carrol put the team on his back and carried them. They won't be able to do that next year, and with their only other proven scorer being Dwayne Jones, defenses will key on him. I look for the Hawks to take a few steps back next year, especially with that OC schedule. (NT) -- '02 Grad, Wed March 23, 2005 10:48:01

- He's actually the "dean" of NYC college hoops coaches, with a chance to make himself and his program count for something in this city. While Fordham and DW are trying to make this a two-team town, Gonzo could easily make it a three-team place. I'm certain Manhattan would back him in the effort. But if he'd rather forget the Big City and go coach some state school in front of 8,000 screaming farmers, so be it. With the foundation he's put in place at MC, he should have the confidence in himself and the institution to see things through. Is Gonzo's problem lack of confidence, or lack of vision? (NT) -- John, Wed March 23, 2005 21:08:04
- It may have something to do with lack of money. How much do you think he is getting paid at MC? And it is not like living in NYC is cheap either. (NT) -- JóDete93, Wed March 23, 2005 22:50:47
- Gonzo probably sees the limited upside of Manhattan basketball. Although Manhattan, I believe, is committed to playing competitive basketball on the national level, other members of the MAAC are not. This has the unfortunate impact of dragging the Jaspers down. You are known by the company you keep, and there are a few members of the MAAC that drag the rest of their conference mates down. You have to give Manhattan credit. They routinely accomplish more than you might expect they could. They schedule some big-time out-of-conference games, and will travel anywhere to increase their exposure. They get their feet in the door with many great players, but too many want a bigger conference forum than the MAAC. (NT) -- JoltinJoe, Thu March 24, 2005 08:10:47

Either way, Austrie would back up starting UConn PG Marcus Williams. He averaged 28 points per game at Trinity Catholic in CT. and was named Gatorade Player of the Year yesterday.
Fordham and Providence have offered him scholarships and Austrie will make an official visit to Providence this weekend. He is also being recruited by Marquette, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Florida.

- From today's Newsday -- ramMan, Thu March 24, 2005 07:32:13 [14]
The most hallowed sports in big-time college athletics have glaring academic deficiencies....
Nationally, 30 percent of football teams and 20 percent of men's basketball programs in Division I fell below the minimum standard of academic progress in the 2003-04 academic year. Overall, nearly half (49.5 percent) of Division I schools would have had at least one team subject to penalties under guidelines that will go into effect in 2006....
Penalties begin with a loss of scholarships. Repeat offenders could face postseason bans and, in the extreme, expulsion from the NCAA.
Under the new guidelines, each team in Division I must maintain an APR [academic progress rate] score of 925 out of a possible 1,000. The 925 equates to a graduation rate of 50 percent. Teams lose points for athletes who transfer, drop out or turn pro. A team with a score below 925 is subject to penalties, but only if the departing athletes are academically ineligible.
Locally, Fordham had an overall APR of 977, Manhattan 959, Hofstra 958, LIU 957, St. John's 954, St. Francis 952 and Stony Brook 929.
Key stat will be APR
Newsday
FYI, Fordham's APR of 977 ranks #39 nationally (out of 328 Division I schools).

- I love St. John's reaction to their shamefully low men's basketball 826 rating. Apparently they feel it's unfair to be penalized for the departure of four players under scandalous circumstances. Shouldn't the focus be on making sure you don't recruit those kind of students or allow that behavior in the first place, instead of discussing waivers because there are now actually consequences? Also, former coach Jarvis says that he's worried these new standards will cause players to take easy courses and major in eligibility - as if that's not already happening, as if most of these big-time coaches actually care about what happens to the players who don't go pro when they leave school. I'm looking forward to seeing some schools and coaches finally brought to heel. (NT) -- DamnRam, Thu March 24, 2005 13:51:15
- We have our Hill skeletons in our closet too. We looked the other way for a while as Hill talked of the Fordham Drag and brought in "challenged students." (NT) -- Drag-less, Thu March 24, 2005 14:26:24
- Just remember, those "challenged students" would probably raise St. John's grad rate/academic progress. I'm scared to think what an easy course at St. John's constitutes. Can welding be far behind? Three credits for "Your Camera Phone and You"? (NT) -- Get 'er done, Thu March 24, 2005 14:44:33
- The players Hill brought in may have been academically "challenged students", but they were not expelled, were never involved in drugs, bribes, a transcript scandal, a strip club/hooker incident, or featured in a tell-all book. And all that drama was in the past what, two years? Fordham doesn't recruit such people, and those kind of incidents don't happen because our AD is actually strict. But even if something did happen at Fordham I'm sure it would be handled appropriately, and you certainly wouldn't see our AD shamelessly trying to get waivers from the consequences. (NT) -- DamnRam, Thu March 24, 2005 18:03:54
- I wouldn't dwell too much on this. We've had our moments and incidents over time, as every program does. We are far from perfect. I'll just leave it at that. Your assumptions are not fully correct. (NT) -- Rambacker, Thu March 24, 2005 18:24:43

- I wouldn't be so tough on SJU. Let's face it, kids do crazy things, its really a matter sometimes of whether or not you get caught. I do agree FU is on top of things better than most but also, maybe a little bit of luck over the years too. (NT) -- '85, Fri March 25, 2005 07:54:35
- I disagree. Just because we have had incidents like everybody else doesn't mean our reaction should be one of tolerance for that level of unethical behavior. An occasional incident can be put in some perspective, depending on the facts and resolution. But the number and seriousness of St. Johns' incidents, after having benefitted from questionable practices for so long, and their audacity to suggest it's not fair they be held accountable, that's what I'm really objecting to. Our program should never be allowed to sink so low. (NT) -- DamnRam, Fri March 25, 2005 12:03:07

Add another recruiting prospect to the mix for Fordham. We have taken a long, hard look at 6' 2", 170 lb. PG/Combo Guard Mike Trimboli of St.Luke's School in New Canaan, CT. A good shooter, he averaged 27 points and 6 assists per game and was the 2nd highest scorer in the state. He's a tough, hard-nosed competitor who is coached by former Fordham Ram PG Billy Lovett. Lovett also coaches his AAU team, the Fairfield Stars. He visited Vermont early and has interest from San Diego State, Nebraska, Kent State, URI, LaSalle, UTEP, Manhattan, and BU along with Fordham. Trimboli is a full qualifier who scored 1030 on his SAT's.
Also, our interest is picking up in 6' 4" Michael Glover from Monroe in the Bronx. As per my post in the Fall, we have been recruiting him since last summer. Glover averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds per game and can shoot and score. His older brother starred at St. John's.

This past weekend, Fordham participated in the UMBC Open in Baltimore Harbor. Our Middle Atlantic conference is divided into three regions and each region has two qualifying regattas for the conference championship at Navy at the end of April. The top two teams, not previously qualified, qualify for the championship, but a team may only qualify in its own region. Fordham is in the North region and this was a Central region qualifier. Thus while eligible to participate, we were not eligible to qualify at this event. As a result, we sent three frosh and one soph to represent us and gain experience against some good competition. They underscored the depth of our team and surprised the competition by finishing in the middle of the fleet. Results:
1. U/Penn - 30 points
2. UMBC - 35
3. Washington C. - 50
4. Princeton - 62
5. Loyola - 65
6. Ocean County - 72
7. Fordham - 91
8. Maryland - 96
9. Delaware - 96
10. Penn State - 99
11. Drexel - 110

I visited Midmajority.com to read his journey-ending entry when I happened upon his meeting a "Hall of Famer". Curious, I clicked on the link and found an article on our old friend Freddy Schuman. Unfortunately, the game was at another school in the Bronx with map reading issues, but it's definitely worth a read. Sorry if the article was noted last month when it originally ran.

Next season is the 35th anniversary of our legendary 26-3 NCAA team. Who do we contact to get the ball rolling to have a dinner in McGinley in their honor with Digger as emcee. and retire #34 Charley Y AND # 44 Kenny Charles at halftime. Potential to be a great fundraiser.

- Can someone fill me in as to why we would honor that team? (NT) -- Air Hej '02, Sat March 19, 2005 10:27:37
- The '71 team was arguably he best in Fordham history. They played great team ball at the same time the Knicks were winning NBA championships with the same kind of play. The '71 Rams captured the City's enthuisiasm and filled the garden with around 19,000 fans twice at the end of the season with games against Marquette and Notre Dame, before they went to the NCAAs. They captured the media with their gritty play There were several stellar players on the team Yelverton, Charles (NBA), Sullivan and several who were excellent role players. Any Fordham basketball fan today should want to pay respect to the '71 team as an example of Fordham's potential. Digger is another matter, he ran out on Fordham go Kelly greener pastures ignoring the potential, or maybe recognizing his inability to recruit in NYC. Digger never won a major title in his coaching career. (NT) -- LXRF, Sat March 19, 2005 11:24:31
- Honor the team. Even invite Digger. We'll seem magnanimous if we do (and we'll set to rest a 35 year old resentment). Digger would look small if he turned down the invite. The publicity would be huge and national. Retire Charlie Yelverton and Ken Charles' numbers. Do it right. (NT) -- John, Sat March 19, 2005 14:05:13
- The team beat Southern Conference Champion Furman 105-74 at St. John's - Yelverton had 30. Played in the Eastern Regional at N.C. - Lost to Villanova (which had to forfeit tournament play later after losing in the National Championship game) - Yelverton had 32. Beat #7 ranked South Caroline in the Consolation game 100-90 after being down 13-0. Set the NCAA tournament record for free throw % in a tournament game (22-22). Charles had 22; Burik & Mainor had 23 and Yelvertonhad 25. Bet you wish you had been there ! Any other ??? (NT) -- Hatman '71, Sat March 19, 2005 15:31:59
- Air Hej '02, your question was in jest, right? (NT) -- RAM71, Sat March 19, 2005 16:47:49
- Why would it be in jest? The guy graduated 02 so he obviously does not remember the team. They were a great team, but to one that does not know the history they look like a team that made the NCAA and only won one game. It is not initially clearly obvious that the team was ranked #7 at one point, that they only lost 3 games and that they finished 3rd in the Eastern Regional. Winning one game back then was much bigger than it is now since only 32 teams went to the tournament. I think they may deserve to be honored, but it does go to show how weak a history we really have. I know we have had some good teams, but the most we have won in one year in either the NIT or NCAA is one game (if you do not count that 71 consolation game). That is really not too much to hang your hat on in my opinion. (NT) -- JóDete93, Sun March 20, 2005 00:10:30
- JoDete, it was even more impressive than that. Only 25 teams were invited to the 1971 NCAA Tournament. The East Regionals had 7 teams, and every other regional had six teams. In each regional but the East, two teams received byes into the second round, and the first round consisted of two games. In the East, one team received a first-round bye, and three first-round games were played. Thus, the first round eliminated nine teams, paring the field down to 16. After winning the East's consolation game, we finished third in the East out of seven teams. Because the Villanova team was later disqualified, we became the Eastern Regional runner-up. - That's an excellent idea, Dogbite, and, a possible money maker, if handled correctly. The powers that be, would have to get the roundball rollin' right now, if this event is to be properly advertised, promoted, and, presented. A detailed commemorative volume, documenting the 1971 team, with all of its many accomplishments, including: loads o' photos, all the box scores, newspaper articles, player profiles, and, stats, what they did after they left Rose Hill, as well as what they're doin' now, might be put together by the Sports Editor of The Ram. The epic tome could then be distributed to the faithful, for a few bucks over cost, and would be destined to become a collector's item. This forum could solicit possible titles for the project. Let's see if Tubby Tom can really do something positive and productive, instead of walkin' around on campus, with his tail between his legs for the next eighteen months. I was soliciting feedback re: the concept of a 1971 commemorative volume. Instead of commenting on the suggestion, you chose to murder the messenger and ignore the message. This is reminiscent of your actions at the RHG durin' the game with Duquesne, when we witnessed a "laying on of hands' by "Father Joe". You and your partner in crime, known around these parts, as "The Rose Hill Strangler", may well constitute a danger to themselves and to others, and you have the temerity to advise me to grow up ? That's like the owl tellin' the sparrow he's got a big head ! Admonitions aside, you and RB share a wealth of information concerning the history of the 1971 team. Help Tom in the gathering of this material, and look into getting it published. That's movin' in a positive direction, and will put coin into the coffers. - Back in 1991, prior to a game at the Garden (perhaps against Dayton), a reception arranged jointly by the Athletic Department and the Alumni Office, was held on the 2nd floor of a bar near MSG to commemorate the 20th Anniversary. I'm sure Julio Diaz will remember and could provide some input. I had the privilege of interviewing Charlie Yelverton (albeit in the bathroom, the only quiet spot in the whole place) for a piece on FUV, and never met a classier individual. (NT) -- D-No93, Sun March 20, 2005 14:12:20
- It's understandable that current students and younger alums would say "Enough Already!" to us old grads reminiscing about the '70-71 team. Yet, you truly had to be there to understand the excitement which that '70-71 basketball team generated. They had nowhere near the height, muscle, or talent that many of our opponents had; they started off ranked something like 125 in the pre-season polls; but they ultimately played their way into the top ten through sheer guts and hustle. In two successive weeks in '71, they brought 19,500 fans to MSG--first to see us beat Notre Dame and then to see us lose an overtime heart-breaker to second-ranked Marquette. Charley Yelverton captured the City's imagination, holding ND's Adrian Dantley in check in the first game, and alternately covering Marquette's Dean Meminger, and Jim Chones in the second one (as I recall, Charley repeatedly rejected shots by Chones who was a good 10 inches taller). More.... (NT) -- Ram'69, Sun March 20, 2005 14:59:49
- ....Believe it or not, the noise level in MSG for those games rivalled that in the RHG. Some people on this board ask whether we can capture St. John's supposed position as "NYC's college team." Back in '71, nobody was even talking about St. John's. What they were talking about was how an upstart team of true student-athletes was playing basketball as exciting as the Knicks'--and that during a time when the Knicks were playing championship-caliber basketball. Who cares if St. John's ducks us? It's just one more indication of that program's degraded status. The future belongs to Fordham, if we have the good sense to keep building on what we've achieved so far. Yes, we should honor that '70-71 Fordham team for what it accomplished, and (if we have any class at all) we'll do so next season. But this shouldn't just be an exercise in nostalgia. That team's success should be a model and a challenge to us today--reminding us not just where we've been, but where we can go from here. (NT) -- Ram'69, Sun March 20, 2005 15:45:23
- A great post. You're right - it makes no difference that St. John's is ducking us. We need to chart our own course & stick with it until we have a program that competes at the highest level year in and year out. The problem we had in not being able to sustain the '71 success was there was no program infrastructure to build on. It was like a house of cards - Ed Conlin recruited the players on a shoestring budget using guile, hard work & charm. Digger came in & made the team into a machine that could beat just about anybody in the country, & NY adopted us as it's "home town team". All of NY was talking about the Rams, from cabdrivers to CEO's. Then Digger left, a bad hire decision was made, the budget remained at the shoestring level, & we had arguably the toughest schedule in the country. It just fell apart. This time we need to make sure the foundation's built & sustained. Fordham can be much better than St. John's - we just need the right leadership & institutional support. (NT) -- Rambacker, Sun March 20, 2005 22:17:48
- Ram'69 and Rambacker--Excellent posts which show the relevance of Fordham's past to our present and future. Like Digger, Whit knows how to turn a team around, and how to inspire young people. BUT (and this is the million dollar question) will Whit follow Digger's bad example and leave us for a "bigger" program as soon as we've built up a head of steam? Some people (see posts above) seem to think that it is only a matter of time until he leaves Rose Hill for NC State or some such place. (NT) -- Nervous Nelly, Mon March 21, 2005 15:26:16
- New York is the biggest stage for success on our planet. If Fordham makes it worthwhile for DW to stay, both from a financial standpoint and in terms of institutional support, there will be no reason for him to leave. And if he still does, if we do those things, the job will be very attractive for another outstanding coach to step in and continue to build on our success. It's all about if Fordham as an institution wants to make it happen. Let's hope Fr. McShane understands that. (NT) -- Rambacker, Mon March 21, 2005 22:30:00
- I don't know DW's inclinations, but I think it's wrong to assume that he's inevitably going to walk out on us. From a distance, it would seem that Fordham is in fact a pretty good fit for him. Located in the basketball and media capital of the world, Fordham is a respected academic university where his no-nonsense approach is appreciated. He doesn't have to cater to "stars" with an attitude, or ride herd on potential felons--as he might have to at some big basketball schools. If DW keeps getting support from the Fordham community; if we pay him what he's worth; and if we provide him the resources he needs, maybe he'll see Fordham not as a stepping-stone, but as a place to have a long and satisfying career. (NT) -- Ram'69, Tue March 22, 2005 18:04:57
- Well said. I think that could be a realistic scenario, but we need to start planning for a convocations center fairly soon if it's to happen. As much as I love the old gym, I doubt if he will stick around to play in the RHG for the long term. We need to deal with this reality. He is a big time coach - if we want to compete on the national stage, we need to do this right. (NT) -- Rambacker, Tue March 22, 2005 18:24:44
- The RHG was an issue when Digger Phelps left Fordham back in '71. After being planned as a major intercollegiate arena, the Lombardi Center was downgraded to what it is today. Digger probably would have left for ND anyway, but the refusal to build a better facility certainly reinforced his decision to leave. Here we are 24 years later, and the RHG is still an issue. I love the place, and I'll admit it is an exciting venue to see a game. But if we intend to be taken seriously on the national level, we must build an arena that is appropriate to that level of competition. Wouldn't it be ironic if the administration's reluctance to build a new gym again contributes to a good coach's leaving us. Will we ever learn? (NT) -- JCC, Wed March 23, 2005 14:01:19

- Point Guard recruit -- RAMME, Tue March 22, 2005 21:08:36 [4]
Thought this might be of interest to my fellow Ram fans which was in today's Providence Journal article by Kevin McNamara...
"The Friars may have stumbled onto a steal late in the recruiting game in point guard Craig Austrie of Stamford, Conn. Austrie, a 6-2, 180-pounder, led Trinity Catholic High to a 26-2 record and second place in the Division I playoffs. He owns an eye-popping 80-3 record as a starter and yesterday was named Connecticut's Player of the Year by Gatorade.
Austrie verbally committed to Massachusetts last fall but when Steve Lappas was fired last week, other schools pounced. The Friars have made a strong impression and Austrie will visit PC next week, according to Trinity coach Mike Walsh.
"It's really picked up for Craig," said Walsh. "Providence, UConn and Fordham have offered. He's been a starter for the last three years and plays very under control, is quick and makes good decisions."

I don't know whether it's Gonzo's name or Manhattan's that is no longer what it used to be - perhaps both? (NT) -- DamnRam, Mon March 21, 2005 12:30:42
- With its NYC location, Manhattan could be a perennial power in the MAAC, given Gonzo's demonstrated recruiting abilities. I guess the money's just not the same at bigger programs, however. Too bad for MC; Gonzo's almost desperate lunge to interview for any opening in a "bigger" conference has to hurt their recruiting. Gonzo's problem is that he was "hot" last year, but very few head coaching jobs opened up. There are few openings so far this year, also, and Gonzo's not so "hot" coming off a 13-15 year. He and MC would both be better off if they negotiated a 2-3 year extension. I think Manhattan wants Gonzo (though that could change if he keeps bolting to the door); it seems Gonzo doesn't want MC. (NT) -- John, Mon March 21, 2005 13:42:10
- I'm always puzzled by Gonzo's inability to move on. Is he suffering for the sins of Lappas and Fraschilla? I would be extremely surprised if UMass took a chance on another former Manhattan coach. But I still can't figure out what he does that must give people cold feet when he interviews. There is no apparent stench about the Manhattan program, so what gives? He might just be the guy who should not move "up," stay at Manhattan, and be comfortable with a very nice career. Somehow he doesn't seem to have the personality for a becoming humility. - That is very true and despite the rivalry I think many here would be ok with the guy were it not for the antics. As for last year the rumor I heard was that he was at the top of the list at Miami and then tried to use St. John's' interest in him as a way of speeding Miami into a decision and it backfired. Miami consulted with St. John's who said they were not planning on interviewing him and Miami basically told him to get lost. One of Gonzales' big problems seems to be honesty, not that that is necessarily rare in the sports world. Just recently he vowed his loyalty to Manhattan College and then in the last day or two it came out that he intreviewed with UMass just last week. That does not sit well with those at MC, but it also does not help him with his potential suitors. The man can coach and he can recruit, so something else is definitely not working for him. (NT) -- JóDete93, Mon March 21, 2005 15:25:46

- Jo, a mc fan here. I like looking at your board because you guys have great passion, although sometimes over zealous.(arn't we all!) You are right on....BG is a great coach and we like what he has done, but he is all about himself and has the biggest ego of them all! If it wasn't for Bob Byrnes to keep him under control and in check, I don't know where we would be. Byrnes is the best AD in the land and that is who we cannot loose! Bobby will move on someday, but Byrnes all ready has a short list of suitable replacements. You have to remember, MC wins in the MAAC, not just in Basketball, but other s like baseball(No home field) Lax, Tennis(no courts) and so on by getting good coaches and making them better. BG would not be the coach he is today if he did not have Byrnes as a boss.
