Yes, that would be a nice place to start....but a lot more than better-painted walls and brighter lighting are required. Quality of life issues are very important to recruiting students in an increasingly competitive marketplace. While it may seem an incredibly silly issue to include in college selection, the reportedly poor food at Fordham figured in the decision of a few young people I know who decided to go elsewhere. Our campus is beautiful and our academics are first-rate, but many other aspects of campus life (including athletics) need a lot of improvement. -- Fordham Rams Basketball Message Board

- You must not be a Jesuit, Stout for 3. Did you ever see trucks making deliveries of food, wine & liquor at Loyola-Faber Hall? The Jesuits eat only premium-quality stuff, but a Princeton survey rated the food Fordham gives its student body as nearly the worst campus food in the country (I believe it was rated fourth from the bottom). It's perfectly reasonable that a prospective resident student would take this into account when college-shopping. Opportunities for fitness, recreation, entertainment AND good food are all quality-of-life amenities that sophisticated students expect (along with first-rate academics) when they plunk down tens of thousands of dollars.   - When FU students in the early 60's had a "belly full" of inferior and overpriced Campus Center food, they organized a boycott of the cafeteria. Students ferried in huge boxes of sandwiches from Willie's and other nearby delis, and the cafeteria soon surrendered--committing itself to better food and more reasonable prices. Alas, Willie's is long gone, and Sodexho Marriott has locked the majority of students into meal plans, so I guess students will just have to grin and bear it. Fordham should, however, look for a new vendor whenever their Sodexho Marriott contract expires. My son went to another metropolitan area college serviced by a company named Lackman. The food was 100% better than Sodexho Marriott. And, while we're at it, we should look for a replacement for Barnes & Noble which also has a stangle-hold on Fordham....but that's another story. Ram'98, my remark was tongue in cheek. The paint/ lighting comment referred to the refurbushing of the Gym rather than the planning for and building of a state of the art student convocation and athletic center that has been discussed extensively on this board in the past.
